Learn it, then prove it
Between a skill and certificate, which matters more?
My answer is both. Just as much as you need a certificate you also need a skill. A certificate can open alot of doors and opportunities but a skill will make people want to keep you.
The reality of life is that having a certificate doesn't mean you're equal to the task, I have seen and heard several stories of people with certificate but when been called upon to do a particular work they can not do the work. I have also seen people who do not have certificates but can do the work properly and perfectly.
For example, someone may have a certificate in catering, but if they cannot prepare good food, people may not return to them. Another person may have learned catering through practice and experience. If their food is delicious and their customers are happy, people will keep coming back.
I am not saying certificates are useless. They are important when applying for certain jobs. For some jobs you need to have the right educational qualification before you can do it. A certificate can show that you have studied and completed something, however, a skill is something you can use with your hands and minds.
Personally, if I were to choose between the two I would go for skill. I have seen different things and I think if I had a skill earlier then things would have been very different for me.
I believe the best thing is to have the two, but I suggest getting a skill before getting a certificate. You can learn tailoring, catering, baking, making of shoes,bags and others. You can use your skill while in school and grow from there. A certificate may get you into the room, but your skill can keep you there. Most importantly, it can help you stand on your own when life becomes difficult.
