Waning Hopes

On the 25th of March 2025, The Nigeria Men's football team popularly known as Super Eagles played out a 1-1 draw against the warriors of Zimbabwe. It causes me a massive disappointment in the sense that we are in all likelihood probably not going to the world cup which is set to be jointly hosted by the United States of America, Mexico and Canada.

We are currently ranked 4th in group C with 7 points from 6 matches, a very dismal and poor record for a team filled with such good players cause I mean we currently have the last two winners of the African Best Male player in Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman who are on hot red form for their respective clubs in Europe. I am pretty sure this has to be the worst disappointment for me in a while.

Another question that has to be asked is where the issues is arising from, the super eagles' players based in Europe are on form but when they get to the national team, it is as if they leave their form behind. The major gist I have heard from word on the streets is fear of injuries, substandard quality of the pitch. I mean most of the times the Super Eagles host their matches at the Godswill Akpabio stadium located at Uyo, which is the capital of Akwa Ibom state. Even at that the stadium is not giving as much as it was when it was newly opened on the 7th of November 2014, according to reports the stadium can hold a maximum capacity of 30,000 people.

So now our qualifications are not in our hands, we have to hope for other teams to drop points which is practically praying for a miracle.

Can the Super Eagles of Nigeria qualify for the upcoming FIFA Men's world cup, let's keep our fingers crossed.
