Good day, people of Hive! Welcome to my blog. Today's topic is from Scifimultiverse, which says: "Culture". So let's dive in.
We all know that culture is the total way of life of a people. The way we dress, talk, eat, greet, and even relate to one another are all part of culture.
In Nigeria, my country we have over 250 ethnic groups, which are Yoruba, Igala, Ebira, Igbo, Hausa, Tiv, Fulani, etc. And each of these ethnic groups has their own culture they practice. For example, the Yoruba people, which is my tribe, are known to be respectful towards their elders. The male greets an elder by prostrating, which we called (dobale), while the female kneels down with both legs which is called (kule). If you see a male or female child prostrating or kneeling down, no need to think twice before knowing they're Yoruba by tribe.
Food is also part of Yoruba culture. I don't know about other tribes, but in Yoruba land, we enjoy foods like amala (yam flour), iyan (pounded yam), efo (vegetables), egusi (melon), gbegiri (bean soup), etc. These foods I mentioned are not just for eating’s sake, but they're a part of our culture. During Yoruba ceremonies, whether wedding, burial, or naming ceremonies, the foods I mentioned are always served with pride. That’s why if most Yoruba people go for any ceremony, they will order/request any of these foods. Also, in different tribes, we all have different festivals that we celebrate as a culture. In Yoruba land, we have what we call the Osun-Osogbo Festival, which always takes place every August or September every year in Osun State. I mentioned it in one of my posts, that we did a cultural day in my department in school and how we Yorubas were asked to talk about the Osun-Osogbo Festival.
This festival is a celebration of the river goddess taking place in Osun. People from different parts of the world, including the whites, come during the festival to partake in it. During the festival, everyone is expected to put on white clothes, and the food they prepare is either beans, ekuru (bean pudding), iyan (pounded yam), etc. Honestly, I'm eagerly waiting for this year's Osun-Osogbo Festival that will take place in August or September, like I mentioned.
Another culture I would love to practice, even if it is not mine, is Indian. Honestly, I love Indians, especially the way they show their respect. In India, if they want to greet each other or people, they say Namaste, which means greetings, by joining both their hands together and giving a slight bow. I have watched a lot of Indian movies, which have taught me some of the ways they act, since I am a huge fan of Indian movies. Like I said, the way we celebrate our festivals is different since we are from different tribes. And like I said, we Yorubas always celebrate the Osun-Osogbo Festival. But in India, they celebrate this festival that they call Diwali, which is a different colours festival; they use the colours to rub each other's faces, etc. I wish one day I could travel to India and experience this festival, because among the countries I want to go to, India is at the top of my list.
In Yoruba land, we have what we call traditional wears, which are ankara, lace, etc. And our drums consist of gangan which is called talking drum, bata, traditional flute, etc. Honestly, I’m not saying we can’t learn or practice from other cultures—we can, but we must never forget where we come from, as in our origin. Because our culture gives us pride, value, etc.
In conclusion, our culture is our identity. It is the way we live our lives and how we behave. Our culture tells us what is right and wrong. And it also gives us a sense of belonging.
This is my entry for Scifi Multiverse Prompt, Week 26.
