Pollution is a common thing in this part of the world. As a third world country, the streets are always polluted. In fact, an entire street can be dedicated to waste and it is always an eyesore. Pollution is always a constant topic here and it gets us nowhere because most times people are impatient when disposing of waste. Truth is, providing the adequate means to dispose of waste is not really helping when most people have a very dilapidated mindset.
Once, I knew of a man who installed waste bins on streets in a bid to combat this issue with pollution on the street. Within two days, the bins were stolen. There are waste trucks that come to pick up the trash but you may see them only once a month and sometimes not at all. The inconsistency is not really helping matters especially when you run out of options.
I do not think the issue of waste disposal is an issue that can be tackled in one day and not at all easily, people of the country have to be intentional in their actions to follow up the provisions of solutions. Water pollution is what breeds mosquitoes that give malaria, not just that, it also leads to diseases that may be life threatening. People have to be educated first and foremost on the consequences of their actions. The least the government can do for a country and people neglected is provide the medium through which something as simple as this can be dealt with. Not just that, getting it done on time and consistently.
Following that, the people themselves need to understand that they have a responsibility to their environment. When people finally come to accept and understand that they have a responsibility to their surroundings, they behave as such. Unfortunately, both the people and the government lack this major attribute toward themselves and the country as a whole. This is why pollution will always be an issue in Nigeria even if it shouldn’t be.
In a nutshell, I propose two things. One is that the authorities in power provide basic amenities and services towards this feat. Not just providing but being consistent and on time. The second lies with the people. They should work towards the Nigeria they want to see. They should dispose of waste properly. Not on the streets, in the rivers, or in gulleys. They should keep it sanitary. But of course, this won’t be completely possible without the help of the government.

Pollution in Africa, especially air pollution is like the order of the day, a normal thing, that is why there's many sick people occupying the hospitals because apart from the unhealthy diets we consume air pollution adds to the health risks we face beforehand
True, and this is the time when we need to think about it; after all, it's our planet.

SDG 12.5- substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse
Lack of accountability, lack of civic sense, systemic barrier, lack of accountability, etc. Therefore, there is a great need to correct it at least at the individual level as a responsible citizen- i.e. responsible consumption and lifestyle habits.
The same happened in my locality too in the past. But such incidents are not happening now. Inconsistent waste collection and theft of infrastructure are very common almost everywhere.
SDG 11.6- reduce the adverse environmental impact of cities, including municipal waste management
