Leadership Isn’t Authority, It’s Serving Others Better

I have just realize that I've not had the opportunity to lead, I'm always found in the followers crowd, making sure my leader looks good. But one short period I was a leader was in my high school when I was appointed as a board prefect. It was a position back then and I got it.

The work wasn't an easy one but it was one I enjoyed doing, making sure my fellow students got their notes updated by writing the teacher's notes on the board. Whenever I think back, I remember how I was super fast in writing and it made me a kinda bad leader to my fellow mates.

I could have listened more to them, be considerate of the slow writers and take a pace that favoured a few more than it favoured. But back then, I thought I was being a good leader, teaching everyone of them to be faster and take their writing time serious if they needed full note.

Leadership is a beautiful opportunity that many may not even realize they are in until they've led their team or followers badly and get criticized or hated. And there are also some who lead without realizing it but do a great job in creating more leaders from those who've been following them.

Personally, from my brief experience, I believe Leadership has to first come from a place of desire and understanding oneself because that way, you'd tell if you've led people without planning it and you really enjoy doing it because you get good feedbacks, that's a good first sign.

Another thing I've learned in leadership from watching the ones who have succeeded is, they are almost mistaken for followers because they understand that leadership is just a grand word for what a leader actually is, being a servant. It shouldn't always be about authority and orders.

It should be about putting oneself in the shoes of a follower, understanding how best they can work in the capacities they are placed in and being an encouraging example to every one of them. It's not an easy task but I've seen leaders enjoy doing this because they first have desires to be leaders.

I decided to focus on the leadership, not teamwork but I do have a cent to share on teamwork and that is, making a good selection of team members and teaching them the purpose of the team so it aligns with what they want in that wise, is a great way to keep a team collaborating and growing with a good leader.
