Delayed, Discomforted, but Grateful: My Last Travel

The last time i travelled was literally just this past Tuesday. I had to return home from school for the holidays, and let me just say, it wasn’t the smoothest journey ever. In fact, it was one of those trips that made you wonder if staying back at school would’ve been a better idea.

It was me and my friend—we both decided to head home that same day. We had our bags packed and left school in the evening, thinking we’d just hop in a car, relax a bit, and get home in good time. But things didn’t go as planned at all.

When we got to the car park, it was almost empty. There was just one passenger already seated in the car, and since we didn’t want to wait too long for other passengers, we decided to stay and wait. We chose the back seat because, to be honest, the front seat in those kinds of cars is usually tight and super uncomfortable. But not long after, these two elderly men showed up and asked about the seating arrangement. When we politely told them we were already at the back, they suddenly changed their minds and said they weren’t going again. I don’t know if it was the way we said it or if they were just being difficult, but we didn’t want any unnecessary drama.

So, as the “younger ones,” we decided to just let it go and move to the front seat. I regretted that decision almost immediately. The space was so cramped that I could barely sit properly. My knees were pressed against the dashboard, and every small bump on the road made things worse. But we just had to endure it because it was already late, and the last thing we wanted was to be stuck outside when it got dark.

As if the uncomfortable seating wasn’t enough, the car suddenly stopped by the roadside midway through the journey. At first, we thought it was just a minor issue. Maybe the driver needed to check something quickly. But no—he said the fan wasn’t rolling and the car was overheating. He tried several times to start the engine again, but the car just refused to come on. We were stranded there for close to 30 minutes, watching other vehicles pass us by. At that point, I was already tired, sweaty, and frustrated.

To make matters worse, the road we took was terribly bad—full of potholes, mud, and uneven patches. You’d think the driver would’ve avoided it, but apparently, it was the fastest route. Eventually, after much stress and prayers in my heart that the car wouldn’t break down again, we finally arrived at our destination. By then, it was almost 7 p.m., and the sky was already getting dark.

Looking back now, it feels like a mini-adventure, but in that moment, it was anything but fun. But I was just glad to get home safe and sound. Honestly, I hope the next trip will be a lot smoother because this one tested my patience on so many levels.

Thanks for reading.
