We are living in a competitive world, and in this world, we are in competition, and for almost every case we need to compete with others like we are in a race. The most powerful one will secure the race and win the top spot. I'm not talking about physical power because it's not the only way to measure the power of a person. Intelligence, skills, and many other things which are also included when it comes to power. Again, there is another way to measure the power of a person, and it's certificates as well as achievements.
A certificate is very important because it is one kind of identity of a person's skill in the present world, but it actually does not represent the skill and qualifications of a person completely. In most cases, a certificate is the primary criteria. And because of that, people who don't have a certain certificate are not allowed to do certain things. There are some people also who are very skillful in certain tasks, but they don't have the certificate. For that reason, they are not allowed to apply or do those things even if they are qualified and skillful and because of that, we are missing many skillful people almost in every sector.
So, a controversy between certificates and skills is very natural. Which is more important? Certificates or skills? The honest answer to it will be skills for sure, but if that's the reason then what is the necessity of having certificate? certificate carries value. Why was a certificate created or what is actually represent? Each certificate is supposed to represent the skills, power, achievement, or the value of a person. They are a system to get those certificates and that system is supposed to judge the skills of a person and a certificate should be earned after having those skills.
But if the system has some loopholes and if any people can get those certificates without truly polishing their skills or having those skills, it's not good. In that case certificate does not actually carry too much value except it's a way to reduce competitor. In such a case, I think we should try to find a person, if s/he is truly skilled for a certain task for what we are trying to assign him/her. And in that case, we cannot truly judge one judge one based on certificate.
But if the system is quite good and truly ensures that a person is qualified for certain skills and the certificate given to those who are truly skillful, it's ok to judge people according to certificate. In that case, the certificate can be used for filtering the most qualified and skillful people for the task. I believe that this is the reason why certificates were created and as long as they truly serve their purposes, we should use them properly. So, in my opinion skills matters the most and certificate represents the skill and as long as certificate represents the skill, we should judge a candidate using their certificate and if it's not the case, we can try to figure out if the person is truly skillful or not in another way.
