In the medical field, there are a lot of things that needs to be done and after much deliberations, it was accepted that the medical doctors can’t do everything on their own and they needed assistance and that’s why today we have the basic medical sciences. As the name implies, the basic medical sciences are medical scientists that are trained to learn and do the basic things for doctors so they can focus on the technical aspects like carrying out a surgery, prescribing medications, giving out advice and so on.
The basic medical sciences includes majorly, nursing, radiography, medical laboratory sciences, physiotherapy, medical biochemistry, anatomy and physiology. All these departments are what make up the basic medical sciences. Some of them are not professional courses but without them the basic medical sciences won’t be complete. They are all trained similarly but they advance with levels. They are trained in a way that they can make the work lighter for doctors and also faster.
For the nurses, they work hand in hand with the doctors to administer medications that have been prescribed by the doctors. They don’t act on their own until the doctor has asked them or maybe they find themselves in an emergency situation outside the reach of the doctor before they can just take some measures to ensure the patient is in good shape before the doctor arrives.
Besides the nurses, we have the medical laboratory scientists that helps to carry out various tests in the lab which the doctor might require to easily diagnose what could be wrong with a patient. The laboratory scientist, even though they understand what the test might mean, they are normally not supposed to disclose it to the patients. Their job is to recommend the patient back to the doctors.
We also have the radiographers. The Radiographers helps to take images of bones and tissues to detect any abnormalities. People are always advised to visit a doctor first before seeing a radiographer because some things don’t need to be x-rayed. They can assist in interpreting the images but that is still what doctors can do. The only difference is that, the doctors don’t waste their time carrying out the test. The radiographer does that and the doctor interprets it and knows exactly what could be wrong with the patient.
Physiotherapists are concerned with keeping the body functioning. They administer therapies to patients that have been maybe bedridden for years, months or even weeks. Usually doctors recommend their patients who have been in the hospital for a while to go to the physiotherapist to help them administer therapy to their body through exercises (it could be mild or severe). There are more to what a physiotherapist can do but they major in keeping a patient fit.
For the other departments like the medical biochemist, anatomist and physiologist, they are mostly into researches. They carry out the research work on various part of the body to help these other departments but most importantly, the doctors, to understand better what could be going on in the body. They might have good knowledge of things to the point on even advising a patient but they shouldn’t because that is not their field. All they can do is refer them to see the doctor.
I’m not sure who might need this knowledge but it’s a pleasure sharing. You can also do more findings to improve more on what I have said.
Thank you for reading through. ❤️

This is exactly how a hospital system operates, the doctors cannot do it all alone and needs assistance to see that everything is running smoothly.
