When Life Was Simpler, Not Smarter

A world without technology would be difficult for those of us who have tasted it… but not impossible.

I actually lived a version of that life in the early 2000s.

When I moved to a new site with my elder sister, my parents couldn’t join us because of their jobs in the city. Back then, we barely had electricity, not because it didn’t exist, but because it was rarely available.

No light meant no TV. My sister didn’t even have a phone, so communicating with my dad wasn’t possible. We only saw family members when they showed up physically.

Not long after, my mum joined us. My sister had gained admission into the university, and life continued.

There were days we cooked with firewood because there wasn’t enough money for kerosene.

But here is the interesting part…

Life wasn’t boring.

I had friends on the next street. We played everything, police and thief, suwe, I call on, and many more games. We created our own fun.

Fast forward to today… Life has changed.

Now, we are prisoners of our own devices.

We spend hours on our phones, constantly online, talking to people far away while ignoring those close to us. Electricity keeps us indoors, and visiting friends now feels like stress.

Why go out when there is light, TV, and endless streaming platforms?

Social media has become the biggest distraction. Some people don’t even watch TV in their homes anymore; it is just a decoration for guests.

Because the truth is…

That small device in our hands now contains everything we need.

But I still believe something:

Most of us would survive without technology.

My only concern is our health.

Today, technology plays a major role in keeping people alive; those with liver, kidney, and heart conditions depend on it. Without these advancements, survival would be much harder for them.

Then again…

Maybe if we returned to that simpler time, people wouldn’t engage in habits that damage their bodies.

Maybe we would eat better, live more slowly, and take care of ourselves more naturally.
