The Things We Miss About Growing Up

source

When we were young, we wished we were adults, and when we became adults, we started missing our childhood days that were free of worries and responsibilities.

I have a lot of memories from growing up, and many of them are no longer cherished in this new era, or maybe it is just the environment I find myself in.

I remember back then, my favourite games were Suwe, Police and Thief, Boju Boju, and I Call On. Now, I can’t remember the last time I saw kids playing these games on the streets because we are now in the digital age. Children are no longer behaving like children; they prefer spending time online with their mobile devices.

One memory that never leaves me is our house’s main door. I was so small and short that my hand couldn’t reach the lock. As the years passed and I grew older, I started climbing a chair just to reach it. Whenever I visit home, I always remember how I used to be that little boy whose hand couldn’t reach the door lock. That memory will forever remain green in my heart.

There were also some adverts I never joked with back then. I used to monitor the time just so I could watch them. One was the Skye Bank advert where they sang, “I wish I had someone who can help with my dreams,” and the other was the Cowbell advert where they sang, “Oyoyoyoyoyoyo, our milk…”

I still love those songs today, but they don’t excite me the way they did back then.

Should I even talk about my favourite movies back then? I loved RoboCop. Back then, it was on a video cassette, and whenever a part of the movie started skipping, we would roll the tape a little to fix it.

Then came the CD era, which gradually replaced video cassettes. I also remember the famous 300-in-1 game CDs. I loved playing Battle City, Contra, and a few other games. Those games brought me so much joy that when I grew older, I even tried to buy the CD again, only to discover that it was no longer being sold.

I miss those games, those adverts, those childhood street games, and the little moments that seemed ordinary at the time but became priceless memories later in life.
