The Price of Forgetting

Our memory is one of the best parts of our lives and should never be traded for anything. Aside from being precious to us, our memories are irreplaceable; losing a part of them can jeopardize many things in our lives.

Some memories are so precious to me that I would never trade them for anything. I also have bad memories I wish I could forget, but one good thing about painful memories is the lessons they teach us. Those lessons help prevent us from walking down paths that could lead to the same mistakes again.

If I were offered money to sell part of my memory, I wouldn’t do it because my memory isn’t mine alone.

I have family and friends who have shared secrets with me, and selling those memories could put them in a very bad position.

If I sold the memories of an enemy pretending to be a friend, I would be giving that person another knife to stab me with, because I would no longer remember the reason I distanced myself from them in the first place. They could easily take advantage of me before I realize again who they truly are.

Taking away the memories of the last five years of my life is not something I would ever wish for, because those years contain how I met my wife, had my first child, lost my mum, and experienced so much more.

The consequence of losing those memories would mean forgetting my new family. I wouldn’t know my wife or child anymore, and even if they explained who they were to me, the memories that created the love and connection I have with them would no longer exist. They would become strangers I am trying to know again.

The memories of watching my child grow would disappear, and that is not something I can trade for any amount of money.

The pain I felt the day my mum died might be gone, but even with that pain, I still want to remember.

My memory is everything to me. Whether from five years ago or ten years ago, every memory has a role to play in the story of my life.

Those memories shaped me into who I am today. Losing even a fraction of them could change me completely, and that is not something I want.
