It is easy to say, Save money, but for many people, there is barely enough to feed themselves and take care of basic needs. That makes saving feel almost impossible.
Motivational speakers often show you the maths of how much you can save from your salary, but they usually forget one important thing.
I have seen many posts claiming that a family of three living on a 100,000 monthly salary should still be able to save something every month.
They go ahead and divide the salary into categories, showing how much should go to food, rent, transportation, and other necessities. But they forget about the unexpected expenses that appear when you least expect them.
Take, for example, a man earning #100,000 a month. He carefully plans how every naira will be spent. Then, just one week into the month, his child falls sick, and treatment costs #40,000. That single event destroys the entire budget.
This is why many people struggle to save. It is not always because they are financially irresponsible; it is because life keeps throwing unexpected expenses at them.
The pumping machine in the house you live in might suddenly break down, and every tenant is asked to contribute. You didn’t budget for it, but you still have to pay.
Saving in this economy is extremely difficult for people who are merely surviving. In fact, many people end up using the little savings they managed to build to survive another emergency.
The people who have the greatest opportunity to save are those who earn more than they need for their basic living expenses. If they are financially disciplined, they can save that extra money rather than spend it on things they don’t truly need.
The truth is that saving is important, but for many households, the real challenge is not a lack of financial discipline; it is a lack of enough income to absorb life’s unexpected costs.
