The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Side of Social Media

Social media has become an important part of our everyday lives, and it comes with both advantages and disadvantages.

Some people regret the day they joined social media, while for others, it has been one of the greatest blessings of their lives.

There was a lady who met a man on Facebook. Their conversations eventually turned into a relationship, and she decided to visit him.

Unknown to her, the man was allegedly an organ harvester. Sadly, she lost her life after visiting him. It was her body, with some organs missing, that was discovered when the police eventually raided the man’s house.

On the other hand, many people have met the love of their lives online. Others have discovered life-changing business opportunities through social media, and their lives have never been the same. For them, it has been one testimony after another.

Now, let us put people aside and talk about the information we consume on social media.

Every day, I come across a huge amount of information, some useful, some completely meaningless. There is hardly a day that goes by without me using one social media platform or another.

Without leaving my apartment, I can know what is happening in my neighborhood, across Nigeria, and around the world.

Yesterday, I saw posts about drivers charging 4,000 Naira from Oshodi to Tollgate for a trip that normally costs around 700 Naira. The reason was the heavy rainfall, which caused severe flooding and massive traffic.

Just by seeing those posts, I knew it wasn’t the right time to travel because transport fares had skyrocketed. That is one of the many benefits of social media.

I also watched a viral video of a flooded street where a man was helping carry children out of a house that had been filled with water. The video spread rapidly, and hopefully, it reached the people who could assist them. That is another powerful side of social media: it can bring attention to situations that need urgent help.

However, while I am learning about what is happening around the world, I also find myself wasting time consuming content that adds little or no value to my life, mindlessly scrolling through entertainment, watching random videos, or spending time on content that doesn’t help me grow.

The good part is that whenever I am consuming meaningful content, I rarely do it passively. I usually multitask, listening, reading, or learning while working or grinding on something productive. That way, social media becomes a tool that supports my goals instead of simply stealing my time.

At the end of the day, social media is neither good nor bad on its own. It all depends on how we use it. It can open doors, save lives, create opportunities, spread awareness, and connect people across the world. At the same time, it can waste our time, expose us to danger, and fill our minds with things that don’t truly matter.

The choice is ours. We should strive to consume more content that helps us grow and be intentional about how we spend our time online.
