Pollution was one of my favorite topics in secondary school. After the teacher has explained in class, I don't read for it, and I hope it comes as one of the questions set in the exam because it is self-explanatory once you know the definition and understand it clearly, rather than cramming.
Pollution is the release of harmful or toxic substances into the environment, making it unsafe or unhealthy for human beings, and this deed is also committed by humans! We cause the pollution; we are releasing the toxic substances into our environment. The medium through which pollution can be spread are land, water, and air.
One of the many times I witnessed land/water pollution was during the rainy season... There are some people that wait till rain falls to dispose their refuse, so what they do is once rain start falling and the gutter is flooded, they pour their refuse in the gutter knowing that the water will carry it away, what they don't know is that all these dirt they are pouring in the water is the cause of drainage blockage.
The same people will blame the government when their areas start getting flooded due to drainage blockage, not knowing it is their handiwork that causes it.
Water pollution is also common, many years ago when I was still living in an area not far from the sea, my sister would take me to the sea side and I witnessed a lot of things done by those living near the sea... They turned the sea to their sewage dump!
Some people still swim and bathe in the same sea. I used to enter the sea back then, too, but after I discovered the atrocities of those living there and how they are polluting it, I lost interest in playing in the water.
Some people drink river and stream water. When I was still young, I used to believe this water was safe to drink, but now I realize it isn't! And those drinking it are damaging their health. these water bodies carry bacteria, virus and some other things caused by pollution and they need to undergo series of filtration and purification before they can be drinkable but as humans, our body adapt to things fast, not that it won't affect us in the future but at least we will still get used to taking those things until our body can't take it anymore.
The best way to stop pollution is to enlighten the ignorant ones, those who pour refuse in the gutter because they don't want to pay lawma, those dumping their sewage in the river and seas because they see it as one of the fastest way to dispose it, meanwhile some people know what they are doing is bad yet they still do it, such people need to be punished, so a law against such act would be nice too.

Land pollution seems to be common but I think in Akwa Ibom they are so strict of waste disposal.
Have never been to Awka. is the whole state clean, or there are more places that are neat there? Here in Lagos we have some very clean areas too
The side I have been to is clean.

Water bodies are not so clear like earlier days. Water bodies are being polluted because of human activities so badly that it's concerning the future, because in the near future, it may be hard to get clear water for drinking.
it is already hard, We rely on pure water here now , normal water ain't safe to drink like before anymore.
I think that way works best also
yup
I still wonder what kind of thought goes through the head of people who prefer to dump dirt in sewage system when it is raining. It is not as if the dirt will turn to water, it will definitely flow to other parts of the city, causing blockage and mess.
illiteracy, ignorance, and wickedness are the major causes...
Exactly we caused the pollution by ourselves.
I think people needs to be more oriented cause at the end we all shout for government meanwhile citizen are the primary problem of the some pollution
we are the problem, the problem can do nothing about it if we don't change our ways.
💯 true
I pray God help us all
I have read your entire article carefully. You have beautifully highlighted the issue of environmental pollution through personal experiences and real images. Especially the issue of throwing garbage in the gutter during the rains has really exposed our ignorance and negligence.
Land pollution is very common here in Lagos
It’s too much. No wonder people say that Lagos is smelling😅
