Kindness Costs Little… Until You Meet Someone Who Has None

You may not appreciate kind people until you meet someone who isn’t.

Simple gestures like giving directions, lending someone a little money to buy water or food, helping carry a load, or even offering a little water can seem like the bare minimum. That is, until you meet someone who refuses to do even those things.

One day, my wife and I went to the market to buy foodstuffs. While we were there, my hands got dirty. My wife was buying kpomo from a woman, so I politely asked if she could spare a little water from the bottle she was holding so I could wash my hands.

She refused.

I didn’t argue or show my disappointment, but I was genuinely surprised. I wasn’t asking for the whole bottle, just a little water.

I walked over to a fruit seller, a Malam, and asked him the same question. Without hesitation, he handed me the water.

I won’t mention the tribe of the woman because this has nothing to do with the tribe. Some people are simply kinder than others.

Later, I kept thinking about it. My wife was even buying from her, yet she couldn’t spare a little water. It wasn’t about the water anymore. It was about the willingness to help.

That experience reminded me that kindness isn’t measured by how big the favor is. Sometimes, the smallest acts leave the biggest impression.

Appreciate the people who show you kindness, even when the gesture seems small. Some people won’t help you even when it costs them absolutely nothing. Not because they can’t, but because they simply don’t want to.

As for me, I love showing kindness whenever I can. It makes someone else’s day a little easier, and somehow, it makes mine better, too.

Be the kind of person people remember with gratitude, not disappointment.
