[TV] Playful Kiss 2010 Review.

Playful Kiss is that Korean drama that everyone in the K-drama community treats like some kind of rite of passage, and I get it, yes I really do, but also... I have some thoughts.

The storu here is act simple on paper, Oh Ha-ni is this clumsy, not so brilliant high schooler who's completely gone on Baek Seung-jo, the top student in school, the guy who's basically a walking honor roll with zero personality warmth to match. She writes him a love letter, pours her whole heart into it, and what does he do? He returns it to her corrected, Grammar fixed , graded, like her feelings were a homework assignment he needed to mark up, I laughed, not because it's funny in a good way, but because who does that to somebody?

Then, because K dramas love a good coincidence, an earthquake destroys Ha-ni's house, and she ends up moving in with her dad's old friend and Guess who that friend's son is...,? Yep, Seung jo now she is living under the same roof as the guy who publicly humiliated her feelings, and somehow this is supposed to be romantic setup material.

Here's where I have to be honest with myself, on one hand, I get why people love this show, thesr's something satisfying about watching a character slowly wear down someone's cold exterior , Ha-ni is persistent without being pathetic, and there were moments where her resilience actually got to me, she keeps showing up, keeps trying, keeps being herself even when Seung-jo treats her like she's beneath him, that takes a certain strength, and the show does give her little wins here and there that make you root for her.

But on the other hand, and I cannot stress this enough, Seung-jo is genuinely not a nice person for most of this, he's dismissive, he's cold, he says things that would make anybody's confidence crumble, and the show frames it as this slow burn romance instead of what it kind of actually reads like sometimes someone tolerating disrespect and calling it patience,I found myself wincing more than once, wondering if this would fly the same way if it came out today instead of 2010.

And that is the thing about watching older Kdramas , just coming to them fresh in 2026, you can feel the era it was made in, bck then, this hot but mean" trope was everywhere, and audiences ate it up without questioning it too much ,watching it now, with everything we talk about regarding healthy relationships and mutual respect, it hits differently, some of it still charms you, some of it just doesn't sit right anymore...

Still, I won't pretend I wasn't invested, once the story gets rolling, you do want to know if Seung-jo eventually comes around, if he actually sees her.... if all that persistence pays off in a way that feels earned, the chemistry between the leads carries a lot of the weight, even when the writing doesn't.

Would I recommend it? Yes and not because it is a perfect love story, but because it's a piece of K drama history that shaped a lot of what came after it, just go in knowing what you are getting, equal parts sweet and questionable, equal parts charming and cringe, sometimes the classics age well..,this one aged... interestingly.
