[Movie] The Death of Robin Hood - The legend is over

Honestly when I heard there was another Robin Hood movie coming out I thought I knew what I was in for. As in any story, the usual Robin Hood stuff... stealing from the rich, helping the poor, shooting impossible arrows, hanging around with Little John, and saving the day.

Well, that's not that movie, The Death of Robin Hood.
This movie does the same to the legendary outlaw and removes nearly everything that is associated with him. In this film we don't have a heroic Robin Hood-hero in the traditional sense, but a much older, worn down one, played by Hugh Jackman, who appears to be in dire need of a break from his life and from the stories they have crafted about him.

The film chronicles Robin's life in his old age... He is no longer a hero to whom songs are sung... He is tired, lonely and burdened with guilt over what he has done but the most interesting aspect of the movie is that it challenges the myth itself... If Robin Hood was not really the noble hero of history, what would have happened?.. What if it was much more complicated and sinister?..

After being seriously injured, Robin finds refuge in a place where he's cared for by Sister Brigid, played by Jodie Comer... After that, the movie is more of a reflection than a piece of adventure... It's a tale of regret, guilt, getting older and coming to terms with the decisions one has made.

Truthfully, this is not the type of film that sprints around anyplace.
It's slow.
Very slow at times and i can really see how some people might have a problem with that because When you're expecting exciting sword fights, daring robberies and heroic speeches you may find yourself looking at the clock. The movie takes a fair amount of time to linger with its characters and their emotions, rather than advance the plot.

I think Hugh Jackman is the ideal guy to play this Robin Hood. All I have heard and read about the movie are that his performance is one of the greatest assets to the movie. He feels like a real man to Robin, not a mythical hero and apparently brings a lot of sadness and humanity to the role.

Jodie Comer also appears to be formidable, though it has been noted on a number of occasions that some of the other characters aren't as fleshed-out as they might have been. Unfortunately, this is an emotional story and the relationships between the characters are crucial.

But, there's one thing that seems to unite everyone: the movie looks amazing.
The graphics are absolutely fantastic. Dark forests, foggy landscapes, weathered stone buildings, all seem to serve to make the world feel harsh, cold, real. The ambience itself sounds worth experiencing from the trailers and reactions I've seen. It doesn't seem like a movie at all but more like being in an old medieval painting.

I am most amazed by this film's willingness to defy the Robin Hood myth, in such a delightful way. The most common adaptations are those honoring the legend. This one is more concerned about what comes next when the legend has gone and the man has gone too, and he is left with only his memories.
That's a bold idea.

Probably, it depends on the viewer whether it works or it does not work.

For people looking for a fun adventure movie, this probably won't be the Robin Hood film they're hoping for. But if you're a viewer who prefers slower plots with bumbling protagonists who come to realize they need to redeem themselves and that their legacy is a problem, then I guarantee you would enjoy watching this film.

The Death of Robin Hood, in the end, will be one of those films that will make audiences alike and divided at the same time. Some will love its ambition and emotionality, others will find it too slow and heavy.

I myself like the idea of trying something different. There are many Robin Hood films already in existence that are telling the same tale. Refreshing is the word that comes to mind, when a filmmaker asks, “What happens when the legend is over?”
