[Movie] Pirates of the Caribbean- Dead Men Tell No Tales

I'm not going to lie by saying that this is not the best in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, since the first three movies are on another level for me. But somehow, it's fun to be back in this world of pirates, cursed treasures, ghosts and silly adventures.

Now, it's the turn of Henry Turner the son of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, who have spent centuries searching for an answer to the curse that had kept his father shipwrecked on the Flying Dutchman but in order to do so, he must locate Poseidon's Trident that is said to dispel any curse.

But in the Pirates universe, it's never going to be easy to find a magical object.

Also, meeting the smart and determined astronomer Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), who is caught up in the adventure. I, for one, enjoyed Carina more than I recall. She isn't only for the love interest. Smart, self-sufficient and always on the prove, she's a woman who's quite literal trying to prove herself in a world that doesn't take her seriously.

Then, there's Captain Jack Sparrow.
This is a movie that simply wouldn't be the same without Johnny Depp and In fact even when the story is not its greatest Jack somehow manages to make it entertaining... He's older, riskier, dumber, and, somehow, dumber than ever.

I think there were some points in the film where I wanted it to be more than Jack Sparrow. Some of his puns land exactly right, others land right in the middle of the movie because they need to have just another Jack Sparrow moment.
But when he's good, he's really good.

Among the things I love about the movie is how Captain Hector Barbossa returns.
Barbossa has always been one of my favourite characters in this franchise and Geoffrey Rush again brings out the arrogance, the humour and the toughness that is your Barbossa. I also didn't expect to get this emotional side of his story from this film, but it's there.

There's the antagonist, Captain Salazar, (Javier Bardem), and then there's the rest of the cast.
Salazar is likely one of the coolest villains in the entire franchise, when it comes to looks. The ghostly look, the dead crew, the movement through the sea... it's all looking great.
And Javier Bardem delivers that scariest of scares.

In fact, the concept of Salazar is quite fascinating. Of course, he's a Spanish captain who has been devoted to the pursuit of pirate-hunting and Jack Sparrow is essentially Jack's personal nightmare, as he did in the past. Salazar is dead, imprisoned in the Devil's Triangle and has one purpose – to kill Jack Sparrow.

I liked the personal connection, as it gives Jack's villain more of a sense of history than he is some random bad guy.
It's also very awesome to play.

At the beginning of the film, there is a bank robbery scene which is just so absurd, but I laughed at it. You then get ship battles, ghost pirates, underwater scenes, sword fights and lots of explosions.
It's like a Pirates film!
It was that, I think, that I liked best.

This film does not forget how this franchise has been fun in the first place. It provides us the ocean, and the ships, and the supernatural elements, and the humor and the adventure.
But, I believe that the plot is what the film fails at.

It's pretty predictable, and parts of this story we have already seen. A young hero trying to save his/her parent, a mysterious woman with a secret to the past, a supernatural bad guy on the hunt for Jack, and a magic item that can solve all problems.

I believe that there could have been more development of some characters. Henry and Carina are likeable, but the two are not as emotionally charged as Will and Elizabeth were in the previous films.

Probably the biggest issue I have is that there was an emotional journey in the original trilogy. You saw Will grow up, you saw Elizabeth grow up, you saw Jack battle his enemies, you saw Barbossa change, you saw the story of the characters actually take a direction.
Dead Men Tell No Tales is more of a side trip.
But perhaps that's fine.

Not all films have to completely revamp the franchise.
The thing that I didn't expect was how much I loved the final. The emotional moment in the movie that I wasn't expecting was from the Barbossa story without going into too much detail. That was the only moment in the film that was actually sincere, given the numerous times it was silly and over-the-top.

The film is also very good in visual aspects. The ghost pirates, underwater scenes and ships all look very good.

Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales may not be the best in the franchise but it still meets the standards of Dead Man's Chest or The Curse of the Black Pearl with the Funny, sometimes emotional and enough supernatural craziness to keep things going.

Well, the characters that we all like remain the best part of the series to me. Jack Sparrow is Jack Sparrow, Barbossa is still great, and the new characters are good enough to carry on the story.
