At some point GOAT got the better of me.
The book tells the tale of Will Harris, a young goat who wants to be a professional Roarball player. The issue is a smaller, stronger animal should not dominate a sport that's dominated by bigger, stronger animals, and, really, nobody thinks that a small goat belongs in the sport. From start to finish, he's been dealt a bad hand, and the film takes full advantage of the classic “underdog” formula. You've likely read stories like this in the past, but if you tell the story with heart, this is one that can work.

The thing that I enjoyed most about the film is that Will is easy to like.

He's not a natural born superstar, he can do everything. He questions his authority, makes errors and all throughout the movie tries to prove he belongs. I love sports films, and watching a character pursued a dream, while all around them tell him he is not good enough.

The animation was a surprise too... It's been a hot streak for Sony Animation lately, and while GOAT isn't exactly at the level of the Spider-Verse movies, it's still full of energy and personality. The Roarball games are lively, colorful and sometimes very chaotic. The games are bigger than life with the different arenas, ranging from the icy ones to ones set in the jungles. I did get moments there I would truly smile with the movie enjoying itself.

The voice cast is also top-notch.
Caleb McLaughlin does a nice job at making Will charming and Gabrielle Union's Jett adds some emotional depth to the story. Their connection turns into one of the most powerful scenes of the movie. Confidence, learning to believe in yourself and mentorship is not only about winning games.

So I was not expecting much when I watched the movie, but I was surprised by the amount of heart that the film had.
It's definitely for the younger set, but it still has a message, one of self-belief and accepting what makes you different. Will does not become bigger or stronger than others for success. He learns to use his own strengths and thus succeeds. It's a simple lesson and a lesson that works.

That being said, that's not a flawless film.
The primary problem is that it takes a very predictable route. If you've seen enough sports movies you'll be able to predict most of the big plot points and not much of a surprise here... It's all been done before, the underdog story, the doubters, the big game, the personal setbacks. But seriously that's what I loved about this movie.

But I believe the film is successful due to its vitality... it's simplicity and straight to the point style was just what the movie needed to be a success..

I didn't know where the story was going, but I found myself cheering Will by the end of the movie... This is typically a good indicator of a film's success.

At the start of this movie I was in with a rrelatively discrediting view by calling it a kids sports movie but at the end I was having a great time!..
