[Movie] The Wealth Story of Sarah Rector In "Sarah’s Oil": Review

I love biographies, the interesting ones and this movie get viewers to see for themselves one of the beautiful stories lived in time past. I had no idea such a movie could exist, I doubted it would be well played without it getting boring at some point but it went above and beyond my expectations as I enjoyed every bit of the story.

Just a bit of a background to where this movie was inspired from... In the early 1900s, an eleven year old Sarah Rector was allotted 160 acres of land in the Oklahoma Indian Territory. In 1913, oil was found in her property after it was considered a barren land. She became super wealthy from that discovery even with oppositions from others.

"Sarah's Oil" is a 2025 biographical drama inspired by the 2014 book titled "Searching for Sarah Rector: The Richest Black Girl in America" by Tonya Bolden based on a true life story of Sarah Rector, an African American girl born in Oklahoma that became one of the nation's first black female millionaires at just eleven years old.

The movie is starred by Zachary Levi as Bert, Naya Desir-Johnson as Sarah Rector, Sonequa Martin-Green as Rose, Garret Dillahunt as Devnan, Mel Rodriguez as Mace and Kenric Green as Joe. Directed byCyrus Nowrasteh.

Sarah gets a land signed and owned to her name as the scene begins with her signing the document to the land. One of the days as she walked on the land, she listened to the ground and felt it in her spirit with faith that there was oil in the land. She was able to get her parents on board to believe her and they begin to find who would help them get it out of the ground which proved difficult until they did found a white man.

That didn't go well as the white men they found understood that there really was oil in the ground and wanted to take back the land for themselves. But Sarah Rector, who seem more smart and intelligent than they expected, made if impossible to get the land to themselves. She also meets some Texas wildcatters who helped her to secure her land and also get the oil out, making her the first black female millionaire the age of eleven.

The story was well told, considering that it's a true life story and a book had been written on it. The characters brought it to life on the screen and you could tell they played their role like it was real. I especially like the strong faith Sarah has backed with being intelligent and doing the work to keep her faith alive which paid off eventually.

My favourite character has to be Bert, the wildcatter Sarah met by chance who helped her gain control over her land against the white opposers. I noticed and really loved how he didn't discriminate against Sarah's colour (black) right from their first random meeting. And I enjoyed his little jokes as they go about the serious business, that is to get the oil out of the ground.

Over all, it was a good movie and I'll recommend if you're in for one more biography movie that is well told. Have you seen it yet or will you see it?
