[Movie] The Glass Castle Review: Love, Pain, and Reality

I have so much to say about this biography I saw two days ago so I don't think I'll be going my usual way of reviewing movies. I just hope I don't give much spoiler as I share my thoughts about the movie because it is a movie you really would love to see, lots of real life lessons and surprise loaded for your entertainment and realizations.

I came across "The Glass Castle" by chance while I was browsing to find interesting biography movies. I had it downloaded for weeks before I finally decided to see it two days ago and now I wish I saw it much earlier. It doesn't change anything anyways, I still appreciate that I found this masterpiece that replays a true life story.

Writer Jeannette Walls shares her life growing up in what I'll call a dysfunctional home. She is the writer of this biography movie (a true story about her family) that was well narrated and just a little touches by Jeannette to make the movie interesting but the story and it's message is true.

The throwback story about Jeanette begins with her being a child to an artist mother who cares more about her paintings and what they will bring to her than making sure her children are taken care of, especially to eat. And to a father who is an alcoholic, never keeps a job, always on the run with his family and his big "Glass castle" dream.

The family move from one place to another, the parents letting their children sleep wherever night meets them. The children even have to go days without food because there is no money and the father is too busy drinking alcohol or the mother busy with her painting. They continue living like that even as the children grow older and wiser.

An interesting thing worthy of note that I'd love to share my thought on is the relationship between Jeanette and her father, Rex who is an alcoholic. I noticed how much he listens to his daughter but filling her head with a hopes and big dreams, always reviewing his plan to build the glass castle which he got her excited about for long.

As much as I wanted to hate the father for what he made the children go through, proving that he is living a life of freedom, I also couldn't help but learn from the fact that he truly loved his children but just didn't know any better way to love them than the way he did and Jeanette loves him too.

Another quiet lesson from the story was how Jeanette tried to live away from her roots, change her story and become free from what her father had always made her believe but she did it by finding love with David, the opposite of everything her father Rex is. She realizing how badly her choice to marry him is, made me also realize how our situations influences our choices.

I can't say enough how thought-provoking, emotional and interesting this story is but I'll recommend it for families to watch. It teaches more about the impact of family on each member of the family and the story also provides a good closure or outcome to the chaos in the life of the Walls Family who are still alive today.
