[Movie] A War Story Without Weapons: "Hacksaw Ridge" Review
I am beginning to really love biography stories in movies, the story of the three remarkable black women in the first space craft era in "Hidden Figures" and the story of Chris Gardner in "Pursuit of Happyness" reintroduced and reignited my love for movies about past figures.
I still have a few on my watch list yet to explore but I bring to you another amazing figure that once lived and his story retold in this well told storyline. I came across the movie as I was in search of biographies on my movie app and I decided to see it without know the figure before.
One of the main reasons I decided to see this movie out of the many others on the search is, I've seen the lead actor in another movie I had just finished seeing. The movie titled "We Live In Time" had him playing a loving husband and father to his dying wife and beautiful daughter.
"Hacksaw Ridge" is a 2hr plus movie released in the year 2016. It's a biography movie set in a period (World War 2) based on a true life story and history starring Andrew Garfield as Desmond Doss, the lead actor who played the role of the World War II American Army Medic that lived.
The story begins with little Desmond playing with his younger brother and the next scene, he almost kills his brother during a random fight. Little Desmond decides never to hurt anyone again, he begins to hold himself back from anger unlike his father who hurts his family for what had happened to him in the past. Desmond Doss grows up to be a fine man, meets the love of his life and gets enlisted in the army but as a medic.
The story continues as he starts out as an army who refuses to touch a gun or hurt someone even in the midst of war. He faces so many oppositions to his decision but stays strong and unwavering. With his wife's and father's support, he continues as a medic as the war began. He didn't only not use guns during the war, he kept praying to God that he saves one more until he rescued 75 soldiers and won a Medal of Honor.
Personally, I couldn't imagine how it would be possible to go to war without weapons (just medical equipment) until I watched how it was portrayed in the story. At some point, I was scared and hoping he survives to save more injured soldiers. It was almost too hard to watch.
But that is what makes the movie worth seeing, the fact that it was based on a true life story and the tension was there, the drills and fire activities, losing soldiers viewers have gotten attached to somehow, all of that felt almost too real to not leave memories of the movie. I'll rate it 8.5/10.
You have to see this movie, if you're yet to. It's a good one in every sense especially if you're a fan of war stories. And yeah, I really liked that Andrew Garfield was the actor for the lead character, his facial expressions matches the role so well. So tell me, have you seen this movie yet?
