I’m usually quite cautious about the kind of Nollywood movies I see. Not only because I like to be sure that the plot is well thought out and stands no risk of reducing my brain cells (no shade or offense) but also because I rather prefer cinematic masterpieces that leave me with a certain feeling of familiarity, nostalgia or sheer longing. The kind that comes with watching movies by my people for my people. So, when I found this movie, I went in with semi-moderate expectations.

Written and directed by Funke Akindele, Behind the Scenes explores the generous and family-oriented Aderonke Faniran who has built a multimillion naira networth by sheer hard work. Her strength which is undiluted selflessness and generosity to her friends and loved ones somehow becomes her weakness as all and sundry explore her the goodness of heart for their selfish gain.
Soon, the overwhelming demands from work and abundance of financial requests begin to take a toll on her. Whether or not she survives it can only be discovered behind the scenes.
Thoughts and Rating
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It’s the kind that sits with you, and you find yourself recollecting at random moments. You may even come back to rewatch. It’s been several months since I saw this production, but I’ve found myself unable to delete it from my downloads. I may just watch the good parts one last time, though, before calling it a day. That’s just how scintillating it was. At least, most of it.
One thing you have to look out for in this movie is the stellar acting. It will awe you and bring you to tears. The plot might not be everything but the cast and the impeccable interpretation of their roles will keep you sufficiently hooked. Props to Tobi Bakare, Destiny Etiko and even my man, Uzor Arukwe. They gave it everything they had, and my delight in the movie as a whole came majorly from them.
I also would like to explore a particular theme in this movie that I feel was the most dominant: Giving at a cost. Just how much of selflessness is actually foolishness. In our world of today, I do not think that anyone is as selfless as Aderonke but sometimes it’s not always a material or financial type of generosity.
It could be physical, mental or emotional. In a bid to show affection to those you love, you give and give till there’s nothing left to give. You give your time, efforts and resources till you become a shell of yourself. Well, I think, owing to the fact that people would talk regardless of what you do, or how good or bad you are, people should normalize simply exercising restraint when it comes to these things. Knowing when it’s enough. Knowing how much is too much. Preventing people from taking till your soul and by extension, your life, is gotten as well.
My major issue with this movie was the hastiness of the ending. The ending was quite bittersweet. Not the type I would have opted for because of how unfair and frankly, unrealistic it was. I would have also liked if some things were talked about. Some very core issues which should have been given proper resolution were denied precisely that, and this gave the end a very shallow feel. I cannot explain further so as not to give spoilers but let’s just say that certain characters’ stories weren’t quite finished as dexterously as they should have been.
Without a doubt, however, Behind the Scenes was a beautiful watch. A solid 7.8/10 from me, and another win for Funke Akindele, and by extension, Nollywood.

Great review, Jhymi! I completely agree with your thoughts on how toxic extreme selflessness can become when people take advantage of a good heart, Greetings
