[Movie] Power Without Wisdom Never Lasts: Agesinkole (King of Thieves) Review

You know how rumours spread so fast; that was how my people were talking about Agesinkole (King of Thieves) before I finally decided to give it a watch. A lot of people talked about how native the movie was, talking about the traditional setting and something we can easily relate to, but my main focus was whether the hype given to it was really worth it. And by the time I sat to watch part 1, I finally understood why people were doing a free hype that they were not paid for. It was not just another epic Yorùbá movie. It is a movie that has won multiple awards in the category that it fell into, and it was a story about greed, fear, power and the price people pay when they allow evil to go unchecked.

I am still yet to see the second part, and I'm already anticipating doing so because the character that stood out to me in this movie was Agesinkole himself. I'm sure other people will choose him too. Right from his first appearance in this movie, his eyes, voice, costumes, the story line, and everything about him commanded attention without even trying to force it. He was not just a casual thief; he was someone who dominated and was in so much love with the fear he put in people.

I do much love how confident he is in everything he faced after becoming victorious. Another thing I admire about him is that he is so powerful that he believes that he can never be defeated. I like that mindset, no doubt. And watching how he terrorised villages and kingdoms and watching his download brought just one thing to my mind, and that is how blind some people have become and power-drunk to the extent that they always think they are invincible or untouchable.

Shifting away from my favourite character for now. The king and chiefs, including every villager, contributed greatly to this story. And I like how the movie demonstrated that being a true leader goes beyond just being a king or wearing a crown. There were a few moments when selfish interests, fear and making sluggish decisions made a small problem grow bigger than expected. And apart from the king and chiefs and the chief priest (the kingdom priest when it comes to charm), warriors also made me love the movie because without them, I am sure this movie won't be complete.

The scene that I can probably call my favourite was when there was a big confrontation between those who stood against Agesinkole and himself during a gathering. Everything felt alive at that moment, especially the costumes they were wearing and the chants, plus the cultural display that I cannot ignore. Personally, I enjoyed the final battle because it felt like justice had finally prevailed, and I remember the saying, "All day for the thieves, one day for the owner", because how can someone be doing bad always and not expect to face the consequences of his actions?

I don't think I have any complaints about this movie; maybe when I see the party two, I might, but I really enjoyed the movie beyond some of the things I have mentioned because it passed a big message across to me and anyone who might want to watch it. If you enjoy watching epic movies, a bit of action, suspense and indigenous cultural settings, I will recommend that you add this to your list. I will rate it 9.2/10.
