[Movie] My review on Ajosepo (2024)

I was scrolling through my watchlist when I came across Ajosepo, a recent Nollywood movie, and the wedding story in it was not something I could easily predict. And I got surprised by how loaded this movie was. The movie director was Kayode Kasun. And it follows Tani and Dapo as their wedding brought two different families and their relatives together under one roof. And what was supposed to be a celebration slowly turned into something coarse, family tension, a mess of secrets and different revelations that I didn't expect.

The scene and moment that began to make the movie a lively one for me was when Dapo's family arrived, and immediately, everything started falling apart. Dapo's parents aren't living together, divided. While on the other hand, Tani's parents are united and are more of a conservative Christian family.

This whole situation made Dapo worried because his new family is about to discover what he might be called a secret. The difference and coming together of these two families gave the whole movie more life and funny moments, but all of them were just trying to compose while they moved around with their personal problems.

Everything became so ridiculous and messed up when Dapo's brother, Jude, stumbled into a situation that I'll call awkward when their father was making love to Tani's aunt. Instead of carrying on with the wedding preparations, the brothers had no choice than to protect the images of the two families from becoming something scandalous that would tear everything apart. I so much liked those scenes because what I watched isn't coming from a huge action sequence but the tension that followed it. It was like desperate people were trying to keep their secrets, but this time, more people were just getting involved.

And I also like how the family all gathered under one roof for the wedding ceremony between their children, but what the families have kept hidden was just coming out. People who looked like they had good reputations started doing differently when what they had been keeping as a secret was threatened. And some scenes that got me laughing were seeing how some older generations were trying to be in control of things they are already beyond their power. The parents of the couples to be also contributed to the movie because they all have different personalities, which kept the family conflict moving.

I also enjoyed all the cast because they all did their best, from the herbalist who tried to separate the two people Thunderbolt held together to how Dapo was constantly nervous to Jude spicing things up with his energy to Tani caught between her family sage and loving Dapo. Also, those family parents and friends who gave the wedding scenes more personality and life.

I also go like how some of the funny scenes drastically changed to a cursing mood, which sometimes looks absurd.... I won't go into those in detail because it's something I'll like you to watch and experience yourself. But what I like about the filmmaker is that the movie felt like life, and some of the things were very relatable, and some were very unexpected, but everything was straightforward family drama.

What I didn't like about this movie was that , it's meant to fully be about the two young people who were getting married, but attention was shifted from them because of the large ensemble sometimes. Though some of the characters were also very loud and at the same time entertaining, Dapo and Tani almost disappeared. Still, everything turned the movie into an interesting one. The family trust was uncomfortable, with some comedy scenes too, and people hide things from each other a lot.

The title was absurd at first, but seeing I got to understand much better what the title really meant when I saw how all of them came together, and things that could have stayed hidden was coming out. No doubt, the movie was really a funny one for me, at the same time very ridiculous, and sometimes it gets chaotic. But when I watched closely, I saw the reality of family imperfection and how dangerous it can be when we build relationships around secrets. Did I enjoy the romantic scenes? I'll say I enjoyed the family scenes more.

And if you want a funny family movie that will make you laugh and still have something to gain while watching, I'll gladly recommend this movie because I do enjoy it from the start to the finish.
