[Movie] Michael

I purposely waited till this moment to watch Michael even when it was everywhere. I just wanted to have a calm and reflective moment because to me, Michael is not just an artist I got to know through music. His music was what I grew up with, especially all his excellent stage performances. Those are things no artist has ever come close to, and even till now, I still have a lot of his music on my device because his songs are not just common songs. They speak to my soul.

Michael's film took me round his childhood with his brother, the Jackson 5, and how he came to the limelight as a solo artist, ending around the 1988 Bad World Tour. And to be sincere here, I see the beginning as the strongest part of this movie because it shows what a lot of people have forgotten about him, and that is before Michael rose to fame and became the popular king of pop that I know him to be, he was extraordinary and exceptionally good at something even when he was still a child. And films like this shouldn't be forgotten.

This film is simply an instructive biography of Michael from his young age, his stage performances and some parts of his life. And watching this movie, I didn't see Michael's father as a very strict man that people tagged him to be; I saw a man who saw that his kids were talented and channelled it into something bigger but through a frightening way. And I will say I got a bit uncomfortable watching those rehearsal scenes because I saw that Michael's brilliance was growing in the same environment that his childhood was not free. From those belts and all those constant rehearsals for perfection, I made myself wonder if Michael got his obsession with perfection from there.

And then there is Michael himself.

Though before the movie, I'd been seeing random clips of Jaafar and watching the movie itself, I was really surprised with how he captured exactly what Michael used to be like. His gentleness, confidence and shyness. But when he's on stage, he's always another person. I've never seen Jaafar in any movie before, yet he acted with so much brilliance and carried a huge part of the movie.

My attention was also on some close people who were around Michael, like KeiLyn Durrel Jones, who acted as Bill Bray, who becomes one of the father figures Michael seems to search for while growing older. And Barry Gold, who stood on his important stage as he was trying to understand the entertainment business.

The part I so much fell in love with was all the stage performances I watched, and this was not because I admire Michael's songs. But I just enjoyed seeing all the connections, how everything feels like what I have watched the real Michael do, from a young age to a global icon. The brilliant performance, Motown 25, the moonwalk, Thriller, the Bad performance, the clothing, and his similar language too. And at some point in this movie, I said to myself, 'Why were they determined to protect the man it was portraying?. And that right there became my biggest problem while watching. Because the movie ends in 1988 and avoids all the controversies that Michael faced later in his career. And in the production, there was a filmed aspect concerning his 1993 allegations, but all the legal issues and even all the settlements forced those scenes to be removed and the ending to be rewritten.

I just feel it's unnecessary to declare Michael innocent or guilty for anyone to appreciate it. But in my opinion, if a movie wants to talk about the biography of anyone, like some movies I have watched in the past, then they should be ready to show us the uncomfortable questions too. Because deep down inside of a lot of people, they want to ask a lot of questions around this movie, but the movie didn't give them that privilege.

And after I finished watching, I didn't have the feeling I wanted. Though I was much impressed by Jaafar's performance. I enjoyed hearing some of the songs again. And I appreciated how they made me see the younger version of Michael before he became the king of pop. But I just felt the writer stopped halfway towards when the story was getting more complicated. Maybe they don't want to show that area.

And maybe that is where lies the tragedy of Michael because what I watched was how the world created him but refused to show us what happened when he became a human being too complicated for the world to understand.

I would recommend the movie, especially for other people like me out there who grew up listening to Michael's songs and perhaps still listen. Just don't put your hope in seeing the full episodes of how he lived. Just selected chapters were acted on.

Esperé a propósito hasta este momento para ver Michael, aunque ya se pudiera ver por todas partes. Simplemente quería tener un momento de calma y reflexión porque, para mí, Michael no es solo un artista al que conocí a través de la música. Crecí con su música, sobre todo con todas sus excelentes actuaciones en directo. Son cosas a las que ningún artista se ha acercado jamás, y aún hoy sigo teniendo mucha de su música en mi dispositivo porque sus canciones no son simples canciones. Me llegan al alma.

La película sobre Michael me llevó a recorrer su infancia junto a su hermano, los Jackson 5, y cómo saltó a la fama como solista, terminando en torno a la gira mundial «Bad» de 1988. Y, para ser sincero, considero que el comienzo es la parte más destacada de esta película, porque muestra lo que mucha gente ha olvidado de él: antes de que Michael saltara a la fama y se convirtiera en el popular «rey del pop» que yo conozco, ya era extraordinario y excepcionalmente bueno en algo, incluso cuando aún era un niño. Y películas como esta no deberían caer en el olvido.

Esta película es, sencillamente, una biografía instructiva de Michael desde su infancia, pasando por sus actuaciones en el escenario y algunos momentos de su vida. Y al verla, no percibí al padre de Michael como el hombre tan estricto que la gente solía describir; vi a un hombre que se dio cuenta de que sus hijos tenían talento y lo canalizó hacia algo más grande, aunque lo hiciera de una forma aterradora. Y debo decir que me sentí un poco incómodo viendo esas escenas de ensayo, porque me di cuenta de que el talento de Michael crecía en un entorno en el que su infancia no era libre. Al ver esos cinturones y todos esos ensayos constantes en busca de la perfección, me pregunté si Michael había heredado de ahí su obsesión por la perfección.

Y luego está el propio Michael.

Aunque antes de la película ya había visto algunos fragmentos sueltos de Jaafar y había visto la película en sí, me sorprendió mucho cómo captó exactamente cómo era Michael. Su amabilidad, su confianza y su timidez. Pero cuando está en el escenario, siempre es otra persona. Nunca había visto a Jaafar en ninguna película antes, y sin embargo actuó con tanta brillantez y llevó el peso de gran parte de la película.

Mi atención también se centró en algunas personas cercanas a Michael, como KeiLyn Durrel Jones, que interpretó a Bill Bray, quien se convierte en una de las figuras paternas que Michael parece buscar a medida que va creciendo. Y Barry Gold, que ocupó un lugar importante en su trayectoria mientras intentaba comprender el mundo del espectáculo.

Lo que más me cautivó fueron todas las actuaciones en el escenario que vi, y no fue porque admire las canciones de Michael. Simplemente disfruté viendo todas las similitudes, cómo todo me recordaba a lo que había visto hacer al verdadero Michael, desde su juventud hasta convertirse en un icono mundial. La brillante actuación de «Motown 25», el moonwalk, «Thriller», la actuación de «Bad», la ropa y también su forma de expresarse, tan parecida. Y en algún momento de la película, me dije a mí mismo: «¿Por qué estaban tan empeñados en proteger al hombre al que estaban retratando?». Y precisamente eso se convirtió en mi mayor problema mientras la veía. Porque la película termina en 1988 y evita todas las polémicas a las que se enfrentó Michael más adelante en su carrera. Y durante la producción, se rodó material relacionado con las acusaciones de 1993, pero todos los problemas legales e incluso todos los acuerdos extrajudiciales obligaron a eliminar esas escenas y a reescribir el final.

Simplemente creo que no es necesario declarar a Michael inocente o culpable para que cualquiera pueda apreciarla. Pero, en mi opinión, si una película quiere abordar la biografía de alguien, como algunas que he visto en el pasado, debería estar dispuesta a mostrarnos también las preguntas incómodas. Porque, en el fondo, mucha gente quiere plantearse muchas preguntas sobre esta película, pero la película no les ha concedido ese privilegio.

Y cuando terminé de verla, no me quedé con la sensación que esperaba. Aunque me impresionó mucho la interpretación de Jaafar. Me gustó volver a escuchar algunas de las canciones. Y me gustó cómo me hicieron ver la versión más joven de Michael, antes de que se convirtiera en el rey del pop. Pero me dio la sensación de que el guionista se detuvo a mitad de camino, justo cuando la historia se estaba complicando. Quizá no quisieran mostrar esa parte.

Y quizá ahí es donde radica la tragedia de Michael, porque lo que vi fue cómo el mundo lo creó, pero se negaron a mostrarnos lo que pasó cuando se convirtió en un ser humano demasiado complicado para que el mundo lo entendiera.

Recomendaría la película, sobre todo a otras personas como yo que crecieron escuchando las canciones de Michael y que quizá sigan haciéndolo. Eso sí, no pongáis vuestras esperanzas en ver todos los episodios de cómo vivió. Solo se han representado algunos capítulos seleccionados.
