[Movie] Jackie Chan Reviews: Drunken Master

Just after watching Snake in the Eagle's Shadow yesterday, I decided to watch Drunken Master, and I see why a lot of people rated this movie as one of Jackie Chan's important movies. Just like the other one with plenty of Kung Fu fighting, that was how I hoped this one would be, but what I got was full entertainment and something more epic and funny with a mix of martial arts, which I enjoyed so much.

What is Drunken Master about?

Jackie Chan, who acted as Wong Fei-hung in this movie, is a very talented young man and a respected man in their society, but he always goes around looking for trouble. At some point, his father got tired of his troublesome behavior, and he decided to send him to a training school under Beggar So. He was a respected, skillful, strange, and very strict master.

When Wong Fei-hung first got there, he was not in love with any of the trainings he was passing through because they were painful to him, embarrassing, and totally different from what he thought they would be. At the end of the day, this training made him become a much better fighter.

Why do I love this movie?

As usual, I admired Jackie Chan himself right from the start. In this movie, the character he played was the immature one, a stubborn young man. so troublesome that he always makes trouble around, runs after, and always finds all the means to avoid each punishment, especially when he fought his father's sister at the market not knowing that they were related and tried to avoid her when he met her at their house for the first time, which makes him funny.

I enjoyed matching his maturity as he quietly changed how he saw Kung Fu from a playful act into something he regarded with more seriousness after he understood it.

Apart from Jackie Chan, my favorite character was Beggar So. I guess Yuen Siu-tien was perfect for that role, and he executed it perfectly. He is frightening and annoying and can get funny at the same time. He has very stressful and ridiculous training methods, but watching all of them, I saw that they worked.

I also enjoyed all the training scenes because they made the movie come alive more. It was really incredible to see how Wong struggled through all the phases of the training before he finally mastered them all. And I won't, like, I so much enjoyed the scene of all eight drunken immortals fighting style, which Jackie Chan mastered and used all during his final fight, which was so entertaining and funny at the same time, especially when he was drinking from those pots.

And yes, the comedy aspect can't be left out because they were all enjoyable. They didn't make the movie look so serious and boring at the same time because humor and actions were not separated; they worked hand in hand. Jackie Chan can be making me laugh in a scene while going through the beating of his life. His body movement and expression can be so funny.

I didn't have any complaints about this movie because it gave me more than what I was expecting to see from a 90s movie. And I watched it because of Jackie Chan, which he delivered brilliantly. No doubt.

What I admire about Wong's transformation is that he didn't just become a good fighter overnight even though he had the talent right from the beginning of the movie. But he was extraordinary because his dad and his teachers made him see the importance of his talent, which he took seriously.

It is not a doubt that this movie is part of the movies that made Jackie Chan who he is today around the world and in the industry. And if you are looking for an old-school martial arts movie to watch this coming weekend, I will recommend this for you. Trust me. It deserves my 9.5/10.
