[TV] House of David Season 2: When the Shepherd Finally Starts Looking Like a King

After I finished watching House of David season 2 not long ago, it took me a while to finally decide that I like it more than the first season. And after watching the last episode, my conclusion was yes, but not because a lot happened in season 2 compared to the first.

But what I personally like in this season was seeing what I have been waiting for, which is how David became the man I have been waiting for. While Saul's anger and bitterness got the best of him by using his hands to tear down his kingdom because he couldn't take in what Samuel told him from God.

The most interesting thing in this season was that at some point, both men knew that David's future had something to do with becoming the next king in a way, but just one of them was willing to accept what Saul had done and the will of God.

What is House of David Season 2 about?

Just where season 1 stopped, that was where season 2 continued from. David is now well known in Israel after Saul showed him to the people, and he has matured from that shepherd teenage boy and slayer of Goliath as he was called by some in the show. Because everyone knows his name, his name has overshadowed that of Saul, and that feels like a blessing and problem at the same time. The people began to love him more because of his victories in battles. And part of this brought fear to Saul's heart, thinking that David will soon take away all he has.

What I enjoyed most was seeing some of the difficult moments David faced. Even though Samuel was anointed in season 1, he still had to face some difficult moments alone while he still had to live under Saul's roof as the king's singer and warrior and obey his authority. Imagine being the chosen one, the next in line to be the king and do greater things, but you still find yourself under the roof of someone who is slowly becoming your enemy and searching for you. David was in that type of impatient situation, but he was not moved. He was patient and followed Saul's instructions.

Why did I enjoy David's character?

Just like my namesake, David still remained my favorite character even though I saw more of his imperfections right in this season. It was like he was overloaded with a lot of things at a young age. He was in love with one of Saul's daughters while still going to battlefields and winning as he was still trying to figure out his life while handling responsibility, power, friendship, and his family.

I was not expecting his relationship with Jonathan to be like that was, but I enjoyed their loyal relationship. They shared a bond together, even though Jonathan's father was angry with David. But Jonathan had no reason to be jealous of their friendship. Jonathan already knew David was the anointed before his father, but he still took their friendship more seriously and even defended David in front of his family.

Saul became the character I couldn't stop watching

To be honest, at some point, I got frustrated watching Saul's behavior in this season more than in the first because he totally lost his mind here. The way he was totally consumed in his own fear. Instead of accepting what Samuel had said and accepting David's raise, he kept on trying to fight it and was out of control.

What made this so interesting for me was that it was becoming so obvious to everyone, and he was being referred to as the mad king. I could see how insecure he has become in some of the scenes, this fear and willingness to do anything to not lose his kingdom, and the pressure from his family, especially from his wife. But one thing I noticed is that, from those pressures, him finding a way to do the right thing keeps him away from his throne and people he cared for because they were also trying to protect themselves from a "mad king."

Michal also stood out to me

And one of the scenes I always anticipated was seeing Michal and David together because right from season 1, when he saw David singing at a party and he was called to perform, there was this instant chemistry between them, which I like. She was not just David's love interest; she found herself being one of Saul's daughters and loving David deeply. And in this season 2, she was put in a very tight position, especially when she saw how her father's hatred for David was growing stronger.

I felt so sorry for her at some point because I can't imagine how she felt when she caught herself in the middle of her family falling apart and the man she was in love with was the reason for it.

My favorite parts

In this movie, most of my favorite scenes were majorly battles because I was able to see how much David had changed over time. From the teenage boy who goes around with his mother asking questions, to a shepherd boy after his mother was killed by a lion, to a giant slayer who now controls thousands of soldiers, including his brothers. So seeing all these stages of him was so satisfying to watch even more than reading it in books back then.

But that isn't all. I also enjoy seeing him and Jonathan talk, especially when Saul was searching for David and Jonathan kept him safe and told him he would talk to his father and send David a signal either to run or return to the palace. And yes, I can't leave David's scenes with Michal out because there was more to their love story. They had love, yet family drama, fear, politics, and their future.

And another thing I can leave out was how real every scene felt. It gave everything: location, palace, clothing, and how things were done in the olden Bible days and not just a rushed Bible movie. I didn't think I had or saw any complaints about the whole scene.

My final thoughts

For me, I felt more connection in this season 2 than in season 1. A lot of improvement was done, and it felt stronger because it was the heart of the drama in a way that most characters have developed, with the introduction of more characters too, and the conflict became something personal. If you are the type that enjoys real Bible stories, I will say you should try this out, but start from season 1.

I am anticipating what will happen in the next season. What will happen to Saul, and how much more improved would it have gotten from this season 2? Maybe my rating will increase or decrease.
