[TV] Blood Sisters

Recently, I have seen a series of movies across all movie industries around the world, and I've also seen quite some Nollywood too. And in this crime movie, Blood Sisters, I'll say the crime was not the disturbing thing for me, but the reason why it was committed was. According to some of the spoilers that I've seen around the internet, I was expecting it to be another thriller or action movie where the two friends would be running away from the police, but after watching some scenes, I saw that it was not what I initially imagined, but it was about domestic abuse, money, family power, and the bad things some people can do when they believe they have control over some people's lives, especially in a relationship...

The series started with two best friends, Kemi and Sarah, who were living just fine, but their lives took a turn around after Kemi accidentally killed Kola, Sarah's fiancé, while he was trying to abuse her just on their wedding day in a hotel when she walked into her room.

Both of them decided to chop off his body part and decided to bury it in a shallow grave. But that just made the whole situation worse because Kola's family are not just common people. They have influence, money, and secrets and have a lot of people on their payroll who are ready to do anything for them and protect their family name.

While watching this movie, I found Kemi to be more interesting because she was kinda bold and outspoken, but as for Sarah, I felt sorry for her because when she had already seen the signs that Kola was a very abusive person, she still spent a lot of time convincing herself that everything could work out. On the other hand, her fiancé, Kola, always has a say over how she appears and what she should wear, physically abuses her, and tells her who to interact with. And what got me so angry was how Sarah's mother didn't see anything harmful in it because she always tells her daughter to endure despite everything happening. That part felt a bit painful and realistic to me because in reality, I've heard how people tell a woman to endure her relationship or married life just for money, protect her family reputation, or even keep them from the shame of divorcing or cancelling such a marriage.

And on the other hand, Kemi was a good friend to Sarah. She stood by her even though Kemi was the opposite of Sarah: exposed, having seen a lot, loud, able to be reckless at times, and stubborn, but she's always with her friend even in difficult times. What started the whole situation was her decision to intervene. But personally, I can't blame her for her actions because she reacted when she saw that Kola was straggling her friend on their wedding day after she told her she can't continue with the marriage.

Then there is the mother of the groom, Uduak. She was probably the most disturbing character for me because she always looks good to people on the outside, but she has a lot of bad sides and secrets she was protecting all because she has the power. After what happened to her son, she was not physically after Kemi and Sarah herself, but she had people everywhere doing that for her. And at all costs, she was so obsessed with protecting their family name, the Ademola family. And then I saw her manipulate all those who were around her, and those whose money could buy their loyalty got me wondering what money can really do when it's coupled with power and influence in the wrong hands and there is no accountability for it.

I also like the marriage from one of Ademola's family. Femi is married to Yinka, and I saw the dynamic of their marriage too because it was not only there for romance in a way that after Kola's death, her brother, Femi, wanted to take his position while his wife fully supported all his decisions. And in their family, everyone seems to calculate everything they gain.

And I like how the series portrayed Inspector Joe because despite all the inconvenience, he still wanted to investigate the whole death situation and know the truth even though the whole police system around him was not clean, which became like a threat to his career.

Even though Kemi and Sarah were not bloods, the title made everything between them more interesting, which shows people don't have to be biologically related for us to call them "bloods." They both became sisters after knowing each other for years, and when Sarah's life was falling apart, Kemi went all in to protect her even when her mother couldn't. I so much like that part of the movie. After Kola's death, I will say I like the drama that stirred up in the Ademola family. How their secret was gradually being revealed.

My issue with this series was how they tried to compress a lot of things like family drama, relationship issues, death of Kola, domestic violence, drug addiction, betrayal, police corruption, family politics, and competitive behavior into just four short episodes. A lot of these things I mentioned made the show lively, but they were not given enough space and scenes to properly develop. They were just too brief for my liking.

But one thing I should praise the writer for is how Kemi and Sarah complement each other emotionally and how they didn't make the whole guilt situation about the person that was killed but about how he was also power-drunk and abusive and trying to strangle his wife to death before Kemi stepped in. Yes, they were the victims, but they also tried, not even tried. They buried his body in a shallow grave. Uduak loved Kola, but her love made her do a lot of toe-stepping just to catch Sarah and Kemi. And I like how almost everyone in this series has something tied to them, even if little, because almost everyone is guilty of something.

It's a 9.3/10 for me, and I'll recommend it if you love watching storylines that fall into the category of the review I just gave. You can watch and give me feedback. Thanks for reading.
