[Movie] Student of the Year: The Ultimate Fantasy Movie

If you grew up watching Bollywood, you have probably seen Student of the Year at least once. It is a movie where you will see everything except actual studying. I give it a 60/100, mostly because it feels less like a real movie and more like a big-budget project made to launch three star kids into the industry. To do that, the movie relies on shirtless scenes, bikini moments, and camera shots that focus way too much on showing off their looks.

The college life in this movie is totally fake. They show students drinking alcohol all the time, touching each other inappropriately, posing, and acting like being a playboy is something cool. Bragging about sleeping with a hundred people while still in college is shown as a flex instead of a bad thing. Almost 90% of regular people cannot relate to this lifestyle, where huge canteens, partying in clubs, and having zero rules are shown as normal student life.

To connect the dance numbers, the movie uses basic stories: the rich guy with daddy issues and the middle-class guy with money problems. But honestly, the money problems shown here are so small that they do not feel like real struggles at all. The competition to win the "Student of the Year" trophy does not test smart people or hard work. Instead, it is about swimming races, treasure hunts, and fashion walks. In real life, students in top colleges actually study hard. Here, studying is shown in just one short song before the movie goes back to Thailand trips and drama.

Behind the fast cars and cool bikes, which looked awesome to kids back then, the relationships are a total mess. Shanaya is shown as a sweet, innocent girl, but her actions say something else. She uses Abhimanyu to make Rohan jealous, crosses boundaries while giving emotional support during a medical emergency, and then plays the victim when the guys call her out. She keeps saying she hates breaking relationships, but she creates all the drama between two best friends and then blames them for it.

Nothing shows how crazy this movie is better than the ending. Ten years later, right after a funeral, two former best friends get into a fight. Suddenly, the fight turns into an argument about who was better in bed. One brags about his body count, the other reveals a secret, and somehow this leads to them hugging and becoming friends again. It makes zero sense. But if you turn off your brain and watch it as a simple fantasy movie made for teenagers of that time, it is still a fun watch.
