Film Review of Resident Evil (2026)

Resident Evil returns to movies in 2026 with another attempt to bring the game to movie audiences. Based on the popular video game series from Capcom, the new film introduces an original protagonist and an entirely new story. Not that the previous films were faithful adaptations, in fact, I think this movie is closer to games than the ones starring Milla Jovovich.

Plot Summary

The story follows Bryan, a medical courier who accepts a delivery job to a hospital in Raccoon City. If you played the game, Raccoon City is the setting of Resident Evil 2 with the main character, Leon Kennedy who wasn't shown accurately in previous movies. Anyway, what initially appears to be an ordinary assignment quickly turns scary. While traveling through a remote, snowy area, Bryan accidentally hits a woman with his vehicle. His tried to help her but it leads to horrifying events.

Soon, Bryan discovers that the an outbreak has transformed people and animals into violent creatures. He must find a way to survive with limited resources and little understanding of what is happening.

His journey takes him through isolated houses, tunnels and other places where scary things can emerge. Along the way, Bryan encounters scary creatures and becomes caught up a biological disaster connected to dangerous experiments.

Unlike a conventional action hero, Bryan is an ordinary person, even comically stupid, who has to rely on his instincts and whatever weapons (true to the spirt of the game) he can find. His struggle to escape forms the plot of the film.

My Thoughts on the Movie

What I liked about the film is that combines scary monster encounters with sudden scares and moments of humor. Another interesting element is the main character. Bryan is not a competent main character. He is simply a guy trying to complete a job and get through a terrible night alive. He is incompetent to the role he was forced to play and it serves as the funny part of the movie.

The movie also captures the spirit of the video games through weapons and bullets he acquires, the keys needed to open gates or locks and there was even a typewriter in one scene that is familiar to players of the games as a "save point".

I recommend this movie not only to fans of horror but also to fans of the games.
