Why I Must Make It In Life

I have had plenty of "I must make it in life" moments, and today is no exception. I feel like every Nigerian has had their own I must make it moment, and this is not just because of family expectations or personal goals, but because of the harsh realities of unfair treatment by those in authority. When you do not have connections or wealth, the system is usually stacked against you in most cases.

Something that happened today that triggered one of those moments is how my younger brother's lodge was raided by some operatives of a law enforcement agency a few nights ago, and we only found out when we tried to reach him and his phone kept ringing unanswered. We were worried sick. The next day, my dad went to the lodge and discovered what had happened. He immediately headed to the authorities office to secure my brother's bail, but they have been frustrating my dad for the past two days and counting. They also threatened to charge my brother in court for cybercrime. What was even more infuriating was that many others who were arrested during the raid with him have been released without any issues, either because they have the money to bribe their way out or have connections.

What is even more annoying is the known fact that my brother is innocent; he has been kept in their custody because of some amount of money his friend sent to his account for him to purchase something for him, so to the authorities, they are saying, Why would such an amount enter his account when he's just a student.

Seriously, it is in moments like these that I tell myself that I must make it in life; I will not be held back. I refuse to be small; I need to do whatever it takes legally to fend and create a better future for myself and my loved ones. And I will also build meaningful connections with influential people. If I can't get to them, then I will make sure I have a strong network, like knowing someone that knows someone that is influential. At the moment I am more than determined to have and nurture relationships with people who have access to what I might need.

Another "I must make it" moment for me was witnessing a tragic event at a hospital. A person was rushed in for emergency treatment, but the nurses refused to attend to them without them making a deposit payment. I understand the hospital's policy and the reasoning behind it; that's because some patients don't pay their bills after being treated. This person eventually passed away even before the family members could get the money. That moment felt like a punch to my gut. I couldn't help but wonder if things would have turned out differently, maybe the person would have still been alive if I had money with me to settle their bills.
