Serving Beyond The Uniform: Our Journey of Impacting Students One School at a Time.

Yesterday happened to be one my best days, NYSC had been stressful, draining and all. But in my CDS there's something we always do in our own little ways, even though small, it reminds me that little/small efforts go a long way as well.

I am the president of my CDS group, and I've hold that position for some months now, and I happen to introduce something into our CDas activities, which is to do our best in impacting the lives of students in the various schools in my local government. And it was that we should visit one school every month, talk to them about their health, personal hygiene, cleanliness and the likes, educating them on things like that will go a long way in making a huge difference in the community, and also that we will be supporting them with little items.

I'm happy because ever since we started, my members have been very very supportive, not all of them though, but a lot were so in it, there are even some set of people that will always contribute beyond what we ask them to just do we could be able to fund the program and get the necessary items we will distribute to the students.

Now, most of our outreaches, not even most, all of our past outreaches as always been centered around females, we ask the male to give us space or we take the female students to a place where the males won't be able to come to, and we teach them on hygiene, with our focus which is always on menstrual hygiene, how to care for themselves, how to count their cycle, how to clean themselves, what to use and what not to use. And we share sanitary pads during all of those programs.

But then, this past one we did was this week's Thursday and it was different. We didn't separate the school kids, we treated a pressing topic we've been noticing amidst them, and that is oral hygiene. This topic doesn't need us to separate males from females, it is one both genders need to be a part of. And I'm glad at the turnup of both the school students and my fellow corp members.

Though the program seems like it won't hold at first, the reason being that the school we were to use gave me an information just two days before the program that all Catholic schools in the local government are having a program and for that reason the school won't be opening on Thursday since there's is a Catholic school as well. I did my best to reach out to other school principals but most of them already had programs as well while some said the notice was too short.

I didn't want to use my school yet, I wanted us to touch other schools first where we have corp members, but since I couldn't get through to other schools, I had no option but to inform my school principal. And I'm glad he approved it immediately, my CDS members as well were glad that we could finally get a school to do our outreach.

And this particular outreach turned out better then I expected, the various speakers did their best, the told them all they needed to know about their teeths, tongue, gum and all, and also how to care for it. The students on the other hand paid rapt attention, they asked questions, we answered them, we asked them questions as well and they responded.

After we are done with all of the discussions, we distributed toothpaste and toothbrushes to over a hundred students that were in attendance. I was the most happiest, knowing fully well it is the school I'm serving in, and even my principal showed appreciation and like every other school we do visit always says, he said the same too, that this was the first time corp members(corpers) would come do such in their school.

I'm glad the outreach turned out successful, and I'm glad that because we are determined, we made sure it was a success and we can point at our beautiful results. Next month we are having another outreach, the date and school has not been fixed yet, but we will.
