Growing up, my mum always insisted that I keep my hair very low. She knows my hair grew too fast and didn’t like the idea of me going to the barbershop every few weeks for another haircut. To her, a low-cut was practical, cost-effective and easy to maintain. As a kid, I didn’t have much say in the matter, so I went for her preference.
Back then, before heading to school, I always went for a low-cut. But as soon as I got into university, everything changed. I was finally in an environment where I could make my own decisions, and I was surrounded by people experimenting with their hair—some choosing to go for fuller hairstyles and others getting creative with fades and trims. When i saw how stylish and confident they looked, I thought, why not try something different myself?
At first, I went for an hairstyle called low fade. It was neat, simple, and felt like the safest option as I started experimenting. Plus, I thought it suited my head shape perfectly. But as I got more confident, I decided to try the taper fade. For those unfamiliar, the taper fade is a clean and stylish haircut where the hair on the sides and back of the head is gradually trimmed, to create a smooth blend into the longer hair on top of the head. It’s actually simple but yet sharp, from the first time i went for this hairstyle, I instantly fell in love with the way it made me look.
One reason the taper fade is my favorite hairstyle is how fresh and clean it makes me look. After getting the cut, I always feel like a brand-new person. It frames my face perfectly and highlights my features in a way that other hairstyles didn’t. Also, now that I have facial hair and a beard, the taper fade feels like the perfect complement. It kind of balance my appearance and gives me this mature, polished look. People often tell me how good I look after a fresh cut, which boosts my confidence even more.
Another reason I love this style is its versatility. The taper fade works for all kinds of occasions. Whether I’m attending a formal event, hanging out with friends, or just going about my day, it always feels appropriate. It’s a hairstyle that never goes out of style and adapts well to different trends. I also love how easy it is to maintain. Even when my hair starts growing back, the fade still looks good for some weeks, which makes it a practical choice for someone like me.
I remember one time I let my hair grow out for months before finally visiting the barbershop. After getting my usual taper fade, I went home feeling good and happy about my fresh look. But my mum wasn’t having it. She looked at me and said, “Juwon, why did you dash them money at the barbershop? Did you even touch this hair at all?” She couldn’t understand why I would pay for what she thought was a slight trim. I had to explain to her that this style was intentional, and it made me feel confident and stylish. After all, it was my money, and I knew it was well spent.
At the end of the day ,The taper fade just works for me—it’s clean, sharp, and it fits my style perfectly. I have literally be going for it for years now and it has become part of how I express myself and i honestly can’t see myself going back to the plain low-cuts I used to have. This style is me, and as long as it makes me feel confident and comfortable, I’m sticking with it for as long as possible.
