Our New Normal
Just a few days ago, while I stepped out to attend to a few engagements, the tricycle I boarded, conversation erupted and as I was the only lady in their midst, I couldn't join in their conversation especially as I was being careful not to be jazz, we all know how the country has turned.
Along the line, their conversation diverted to the happenings in our country especially the spike in the prices of things, well when they got to this particular conversation, my ears were all open to hear what they had to say about the whole economy stuff.
I was trying to be the good girl until one of them said "By December period, the whole thing will reduce to how it was".
So, I was forced to ask him how? We all know that on a normal before the increase in things, the December period is always the month where prices of things get hiked up because it is a celebration or festive period, so how then will things now reduce?
He began to fumble and I told him, that as far as I was concerned, our current situation had come to stay, it had become our new normal, let's just hope, there is going to be a change, it's not happening any time soon, this is our new normal and the earlier we accept this new change, the better for us because it had come to stay.
Just yesterday, I decided to cook a little food (Rice and beans) and I went out to get things, but when I got to the shop, I was shocked at the cost of things and it crossed my mind, if things are like this with me as a single lady, how are those with family surviving?
Back then, with a thousand naira, one could get on with whatever food they needed that could last for a while but currently, with a thousand naira, you can not get suitable and presentable food for a mouth how much more a family.
Back then, a sachet of water was twenty naira but now, six sachets of water are one hundred naira, things aren't the same, and as far as I am concerned, even though I want to have hope this has become our new normal.
The earlier we accept it and see ways to survive, the better for us.
I do think that the current state of the country will be like this for a long while, but I am hopefully a time when Nigeria will begin to heal will come. Unlike that man in the keke with baseless hope, I do not think it would be anytime soon, let alone in a time like December.
