Who else is following Tonto Dikeh's case?

The police recently invited Tonto Dikeh, to Abuja for questioning on counts of defamation, forgery, and cyberbullying. For those who may not, Tonto Dikeh is an actress in Nigeria and my crush.

A complaint was made to the police concerning some grievous issues. The Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit, wrote a letter to Tonto on 5th August 2024. It stated that her name came up in their investigation so they wanted her to see SP Aminu Abdullahi Sokoto on 7th August for her own side of the story.

She has a lot of power in their hands with millions of followers. The power can be used for good or bad. It is easy to use social media to speak out, but equally easy to get into trouble. Just look at the case of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. This shows how things can go very bad when personal issues spill into the public domain. The accusations can damage careers and I guess that's why most celebrities like to keep their relationships private.

Though the police are still investigating the claims against Tonto, they say she is cooperating and for that she gets a thumbs up. Many times stars think they're above the law. However, Tonto's case proves that isn't. At the end of the day, famous or not you have to be careful with your words and actions.

It's a situation that once again shows all of us that words have power and even more so online. It is so easy to share your thoughts on social media. We've all seen how fast a tweet or a Facebook post can go viral.

What does that mean for Nollywood, then? I think it's a wake-up call. The entertainment world needs to know what it's doing both on and off screen. People look up to them and they need to set good examples.

Tonto Dikeh's case, in the final analysis, speaks beyond that one actress. It speaks to everybody who is in the public eye and with such responsibility. It is not just being a celebrity, it has its demands on fame. Caution needs to be used in making decisions with the rule that words and deeds always. Hopefully, this case will make people not only in Nollywood but in all areas of the public sphere, think before acting.
