A salary man collecting 30k as salary went to rent an apartment worth 360 000 Naira yearly, he is not only putting on an oversized coat but he is putting on a coat that could suffocate him because that yearly rent is also his annual income, if he uses the 360k for rent, how will he take care of other bills.
The same thing applies to people celebrating Christmas and New year... It is understandable these are festive days but we must also be cautious and spend with wisdom and not get carried away with the celebration to the extent that we would hurt our savings.
I have seen cases where family take loans just to throw a party on a new year, I would never understand what would lead a sane person into doing that like borrowing money to throw a party for people to come and eat and drink in your place. Many are indeed mad but few are roaming.

It is understandable if a family becomes broke after the festive days, the wife and children would want Christmas clothes, especially the children, they don't care about the economy, they just want to put on new clothes and not be an outcast among their friends putting on new clothes, also you must cook on Christmas and kill a chicken, you can't starve your family on such a special day and comes a new year when they want you to take them out to a beach or someplace nice... You have no choice but to do it especially if you still have some money left with you, you know it only happens once a year and it will pass soon.
Once upon a time I do not have to worry about anything related to festive days, I am a guy who does not attend parties, I do not like festive days either, cos people are often over-excited on such days and I like being in control of my emotions, so on days like that, I often stay indoor but now that I have a fiancee, I bought Christmas clothes for her and am sure when children enter the family too, they will also need their clothes too, so it is no longer about me but them, so I think this is the reason why most people go broke during Christmas and New years... they have a family to satisfy.
As for guys with no family[wife and children] who spend their money on drinks and parties and start complaining at the beginning of the year that they are broke, they need the sense to manage their funds.
All I will do is prepare food for Christmas to eat and probably a few visitors, nothing out of the ordinary to make me broke.

With a family, you're certainly not going to be thinking about yourself alone, but you can indoctrinate your prospective wife and kids, and maybe they can key into that mindset of being frugal as well..

Sometimes, planning ahead could help mitigate some of these issues and recover rather quickly when the festive season has passed. Keeping with the joneses is always a bad financial idea, especially during this time :)
planning and sticking to it is the best solution but ofcourse most people don't plan and they want to lavish during the festive days
