That One Friend School Gave Me

As students in school or even as alumni, we all know that school does not just give you lectures and assignments alone. It comes with a lot… stress, pressure, random memories you did not even plan for, and sometimes, the kind of friendships you did not see coming. Whether you like it or not, school will bring people your way, and somehow, one or two of them will end up meaning a lot more than you expected.

So for me, that whole experience really started in 2022 when I got into Yabatech for my OND program and at that time, everything just felt somehow, Like, I won’t even lie, I felt like I entered at the wrong time or even the wrong setting entirely, Imagine resuming lectures barely a month to exams… like who does that? It was already intense from the start, no time to settle in, no time to fully understand anything, just straight pressure.

Honestly it was really tough. I kept wondering, I was like , How am I supposed to catch up quickly? Ehn Omo then It seemed like everyone else already knew what they were doing, I was just trying to figure things out, but I wasn't alone there were others who were also struggling to adjust. That made it a bit better.

I met some people here and there but there was one person who really stood out and that was Bolu, I didn't even have to try to notice her.

Bolu is about two years younger than me, but if you hear her talk or see the way she reasons things, you’d think she is the older one, that girl is sharp, like very sharp, sometimes I would just be looking at her like, “Are you sure we are in the same class?” She thinks deep, plans well, and she is very intentional with what she does.

One thing I can’t forget is how she always had my back in school, there were days I could not make it to class, maybe because of how stressful everything was or other reasons, and Bolu would help me with attendance and assignments without even complaining, And of course, I did the same for her whenever she needed it. It was never one-sided, and I think that’s what made our friendship even more real.

It wasn’t just about school work alone, it was also the little conversations, the random gist, and those moments where you just needed someone who understands what you are going through without you explaining too much, Bolu was that person for me.

Even now that I am done with Yabatech, she’s still very much in my life. We still talk, we still check up on each other, and that connection never really faded, And see to me, that is something very special because not every school friend actually stays after school finishes

Looking back now I see that school was not about the stress and the pressure. It also gave me something that I did not expect to get. I got a friendship from school.

Bolu is really one of the things that I got from Yabatech and I am very happy that I met her, Some friendships do not last long but my friendship with Bolu is different, My friendship with Bolu stayed.
