Hello Hivian's,
I hope everyone is doing well. When I saw this contest topic, it immediately brought back memories of one of the most defining moments in my academic life. Everyone has that one story, that one turning point that shaped the way they see themselves in their educational journey. For me, it came from a subject that once looked like a mountain I could never climb, Further Mathematics
Back then in secondary school, I was good at normal Mathematics but not too confident in it. So, when Further Mathematics was introduced, I felt like it was a battle meant for geniuses, not for someone like me. The subject looked tough, the formulas seemed strange, and at some point, I made up my mind that it wasn’t for me. I even considered dropping it completely. But my teacher encouraged me not to quit. To be honest, I only agreed to continue because I didn’t want him to think I was giving up easily, not because I believed I could handle it.

Things went on like that until SS2, when our Further Mathematics teacher gave us a condition: any student who scored below 70 in the exams would be removed from the subject group. That announcement shook everyone, including me. Suddenly, people began to take the subject more seriously. But deep inside, I still didn’t have much passion for it.
Then one day, something changed in me. I can’t fully explain how it happened, but it felt like a voice inside said, “Adeniyi, this subject is not as impossible as you think. You can do this if you believe in yourself.” That little push was the beginning of a new chapter. I started giving more attention to the subject, practicing past questions, and challenging myself to solve problems even when they looked tough. Slowly but surely, I began to improve.
The big moment came when the examination results were released. To my greatest surprise, I scored 85 out of 100. Not only did I pass above the cutoff, but I also got an A1 in Further Mathematics. That day, something inside me shifted. It wasn’t just about the grade, it was about the confidence it gave me. I realized that the only thing that had been stopping me all along was my mindset.
That academic win became more than just a result on paper. It boosted my self-esteem, changed the way I saw myself, and gave me the courage to face other challenges with determination. I discovered that when you believe in yourself and put in the work, things that once looked impossible can become victories.
Even after secondary school, that moment continued to shape my path. In fact, it influenced my decision to study Mathematics at the higher institution. What once looked like my weakness eventually became my strength.
Looking back today, I see that my biggest academic win was not just passing Further Mathematics, it was discovering the power of self belief and perseverance. I learned that sometimes, life places us in uncomfortable situations not to break us but to bring out the strength we never knew we had.
To every student reading this, I want to say: never underestimate yourself. The subject, course, or task that looks impossible today may become your biggest testimony tomorrow if only you keep believing and working hard. My story is proof that your struggle can turn into your strength.
