UNDERSTANDING ME

It’s a start of another beautiful week and as it’s the custom of the thoughtfuldailypost community, we have been given a prompt to share our inputs on. In this prompt, we are asked if we feel others can understand what we are trying to communicate to them and what ways do we ensure everyone can understand us? So without further ado, let’s learn a few things about understanding Hope better.

As a young girl, if there was one thing I find joy doing, it was being able to rightly guess what a child is trying to communicate. I remember back then, I almost became a mediator for children and their parents because I was so good at guessing what they were trying to say, I could understand them better than most people could even better than some of their parents. When I say children, I mean particularly between the age of 6 months to 2 years. Usually, during this age of most children, they try to make some sounds as if they are trying to say something but most times it so hard to know exactly what they are trying to say.

I love children so much that I took delight in learning about better ways to understand them better because even as little as they seem, they communicate a lot. Somehow, because of how much I was able to understand children, I think that also helped me understand people a little more. I didn’t need them to even say what’s on their mind before I knew what could be wrong. Most times, I understand people based on myself. All I do is, I put myself in their shoes and then I understand why they act and feel the way they do. But then, when it comes to them understand me, the whole thing goes south for some and it’s so easy for the others.

Sometimes I feel that I’m a complicated person when I’m with some people which might be true but also, some people that I have met have made me change that mindset because it’s as if they have a manual of me somewhere so they understand me very well and they help me whenever they perceive I need help. I think those people have something similar with me that’s why or more. But it’s always so calming and nice when you have people around you that understand you and are trying to help you become a better person. Because it’s going to be disastrous if they understand you but all they are out for is to bring out the worst in you.

Not a lot of persons understand me, especially those people that I’m not close with but those that I’m close with know me and they try a lot when it comes to how much they understand me. I actually do not expect people to understand me all the time because sometimes even I do not understand myself. When I realize that someone is trying or willing to understand me, the best thing I do is to communicate more with that person. I always believe that it is with more communication you get to understand anyone better. So if anyone is willing to understand us better and they are not willing to communicate, it is almost impossible to understand us.

Understanding someone most times has to do with how much you know about the person, not the knowledge you got by speaking with others about that person but the ones you gained by speaking and communicating with the person. No matter how deceitful a person is, they always find it hard to lie to those they have constant communication with and that’s because over time, those people become a part of them and if there is one thing we all know is the fact that no one can really lie to him or herself. Even if you lie to others, you will always be hunted by the truth deep down. And over time, some persons become a part of us that we are like an open notebook before them.

Some people intentionally try to stay afloat because they fear that if people get to understand them better, they might not want to associate with them or they might seek to bring out the worst or even the best in them and they don’t want that so they always try to keep things to themselves and truly, those kind of persons are really hard to understand. I was once like this but overtime I have learnt a few things and it’s really fine to be vulnerable sometimes but to at least one person. If people are out to get you, they can always do that so I’d rather be honest about myself than be a lie. The easiest way to understand me is ask me questions of what you wish to understand about me.
