WHAT TO DO WHEN THE WEATHER CHANGES

In recent years, changes in weather across Nigeria have become impossible to ignore. Many parts of the country now experience extreme heat, irregular rainfall, frequent flooding, longer dry seasons, and harmattan that is sometimes harsher than usual.

These changes are closely linked to climate change, environmental damage, and human activities such as deforestation, gas flaring, poor waste disposal, and the overuse of natural resources. Since weather conditions affect our health, food supply, housing, and economy, Nigerians must respond with the right attitude and practical actions.

First, Nigerians need to develop an attitude of awareness and responsibility. We must accept that the climate is changing and that human actions contribute to it. Ignoring the problem or dismissing environmental warnings will only worsen the situation. People should be open to learning about climate change, listening to experts, and taking environmental issues seriously. Harmful practices like cutting down trees without replacement and dumping refuse in drainage channels must stop. Secondly, Nigerians should embrace adaptation and preparedness. Because some effects of climate change are already happening, people must learn how to cope wisely. Farmers, for example, should pay attention to weather forecasts, adjust planting seasons, and adopt better farming techniques.

Households should prepare for heavy rainfall by clearing gutters and reinforcing their homes. During periods of extreme heat, people should stay hydrated, avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun, and take special care of children and the elderly. Addressing the changing weather requires both individual and collective effort.
