Fun with seals magpies and a cute Curlew

Hello Hello feathered friends and all sunny people of the Hive

When I saw bird alone, I immediately thought of a bird I saw on our local beach last summer.

You will see why when we get there...

Walk fast for food! (1).png

But first, let's head down to the beach...

image.png

The fun thing was that the tide was out, so that meant plenty of clambering over rocks and managing to slip not too much!

image.png

Do you go rockpooling? I used to love doing it as a kid, and would come home with buckets full of shells and live crabs and things. Ah fun times...

image.png

image.png
Our seaside has the usual motley crew of umpteen varieties of seagulls and many cormorants or shags as seen here.

image.png

The beach we are on is Seafield beach in Kirkcaldy, Scotland.

The tower is Seafield Tower.

The log made for a great seat to have a breather!

image.png

I love how they all line up, it is as if they are on a platform waiting for a bus or train!

image.png

Imagine living in this house, what a view you would get, actually I made a post a while ago if you want to know more ... Seafield Tower is a ruined castle on the North Sea coast of Fife in Scotland

image.png

Just look at those Oyster Catchers, that is probably the next most common bird, after gulls and cormorants.

image.png

Magpies do venture out for a breath of fresh sea air...

But what has got their attention?

image.png
image.png

No it is not another waiting platform full of cormorants...

image.png

But yes it is something you can see from Seafield Tower ....

image.png

Can you see them?

No?

Let's go closer ....

image.png

Yes...

It's our local seal colony!

image.png
image.png

But we are here to talk about and show you the ALONE bird we are making this post about!

image.png

It really is a beautiful bird...

Let's go a wee bit closer.

image.png

Do you know the name?

I am sure many of you do, it is of course a Curlew

image.png

This is what the RSPB say about Curlews

The Curlew is the largest European wading bird, found on estuaries in winter and moors in summer. Look for its down-curved bill, brown upperparts, long legs and listen for its evocative, bubbling, call. In the winter, you’ll see Curlews feeding in groups on tidal mudflats, saltmarshes and nearby farmland.

So there we have it.

I do hope you liked this little meander to find our feathered friend today which was a Curlew.

Funnily enough, I used to design equipment for an FPSO called Curlew.

image.png

It has now been taken out of service and decommissioned. Life goes on... Thanks to Energy Voice for the screenshot.

image.png

This post though, is an entry for this week's Feathered Friends - Show Me A Photo Contest Round 159 hosted by the wonderful @nelinoeva in the fantastic Feathered Friends community on Hive.

image.png

And I shall pick this one for the entry

image.png

I think the little drip of water tips this one for me!

What do you think? Was that your favourite?

image.png

Thanks for visiting and enjoy the rest of your day!

Your lone bird has a very long beak! I love that you shared photos of the sealions sunbathing too.

A very long beak indeed! Ah well the sealions they had to be in the party:)

Have I ever seen a seal in real life? Let me think… no. I haven’t. And that Alone bird looks pretty to me. But I think it was giving you the bombastic side-eye. Like, “ayy mate! What are you taking those pictures for? You could at least seek permission to get closer. If not that I lost my crown, you’d be head rolling I tell ya!” Something like that… lol.

Seals are pretty funky animals, they move on land!
Hehe the Curlew you are right, it was a pretty side eye look!
Thank you for that fun comment!

Those ones almost look like they have scales not feathers. I finally saw my first robin of the year the other day, so I guess Spring is officially here! Nice shots!

0.00099201 BEE

Ah they do look like scales. Oh we have mild winters so robins I usually see whenever I walk in the park. Gorgeous wee birds.
So I am guessing no more snow for you now!

0.00037878 BEE

Not necessarily! We have had snow storms into May here. The robin is our state bird and the first time you see one it is supposed to be a sign that Spring is finally here.

How are you dear friend @tengolotodo good morning
What a beautiful place you have visited, full of life, I imagined, every morning watching the sea through that window of the ruined castle.
To be honest this is the first time I have seen a curlew, what a peculiar and beautiful bird.
Thank you very much for this beautiful natural walk next to the beach
Have a beautiful day

Hello @jlufer how are things with you. Ah yes the Curlew is a cool bird. It is a wader so uses its bill to good use.
It would be a wonderful view and in the winter a great view of the rough sea too!

0E-8 BEE

Hehehe, you sure had a good time at the beach
Honestly living in a house where you can get a clear view of nature is quite a beauty..... The local seal colony seems to be resting

Beautiful pictures

0.00192462 BEE
