On a secret mission - and the great street find/ In geheimer Mission - und der große Straßenfund

image.png
Hello lovelies, I hope you've got your day off to a good start and are relaxed as you head into the evening. I'd like to tell you about our undercover mission and what we encountered along the way. All right, so we set off to find the delicious wild garlic that we just couldn't find last time. We were told about oceans of wild garlic, but there was none to be seen. So we decided to freshen up the places we know and already have with new wild garlic seeds.

A forester explained to us that a site has no chance of developing and flowering if too many people harvest there before it is fully overgrown. The bulbs sometimes don't have enough vigour to reproduce. That's why we ordered seeds that had already germinated cold. What none of us actually knew was that wild garlic is a cold germinator. This means that the seeds need to be kept in the fridge for 4-6 weeks. You always learn something new when you deal with such topics!
We realised that wild garlic finds its optimal conditions in beech forests and near gently flowing water. So we dared to try a cross-cutting experiment that not even the forester knew about. We now officially call ourselves radical flower sowers - LOL! We also immediately realised that there wasn't enough woodruff. It used to just grow everywhere. That will be our next wild planting project, because you can't just take, you also have to give.

By a really lucky coincidence, we found the wild garlic patch that could actually be harvested once. We had left out the other places so that the wild garlic could develop. We were finally happy with a full basket.

On the way home, we came across a grab box in front of a house. Here in Germany, people in my region put out boxes of household stuff and discarded items in case someone else wants them. They write ‘To give away’ on the boxes. Some time ago, I was looking for herb nets that have several compartments for drying herbs. The price offered was 5 euros per compartment or 20 euros for a net with several compartments. Despite the possibility of using HBD, I felt this was wasteful and wasn't prepared to sacrifice my HBD for it.

image.png

And then I find these nets - on the street, in a rummage box, to take away and for free! All I need to do is sew my own doors to them, which I will make from fly screen wire and Velcro. So I have my own herb drying nets for my upcoming herb garden. I went home with a smile, as if God knew I needed something like this. I finished the evening by washing the wild garlic harvest.

A blessed evening to you all and see you next time.

Love this kind of adventure - the quest for the precious wild garlic. What a coincidence you also found a basket for your wild garlic that was for free. Your mission on that day was accomplished!

Isn't it nice when people discard their houses! Nowadays it's like a flea market here every day, and in the Bible they even did it every 7 years. They gave away their possessions and used up what they had left to reduce greed and avoid accumulation.

Nowadays, buying stuffs that are not really useful seems common habit and becomes excessive. After the pandemic, I became more mindful of the things I buy to avoid accumulating material possessions. But at least for others, they discard things that might still be useful for us so they wouldn't add up to junk objects.

I always love seeing your finds!

I just love the smell of wild garlic. It grows in a couple of places in my local park. So I need to go see if it is there this year!

Reading my first post on your account, @themyscira, it was very interesting to read this about your discovery:

"What none of us actually knew was that wild garlic is a cold germinator. This means that the seeds need to be kept in the fridge for 4-6 weeks. You always learn something new when you deal with such topics!"

With any of us who enjoy gardening or anything similar, we learn soon enough that it is a lifetime pursuit, as there is always something new to learn. All of the myriad details of the optimum conditions for any plant to germinate and thrive are a rewarding continuous learning experience.

Your pictures and description remind me of a very similar plant we have found and eaten up on our mountain hikes. We have always called them wild onions, but I honestly could not say whether they are or maybe some are garlic. As I believe they are cousin plants of sorts, I guess it would be likely they both do well in similar conditions.

Thank you for your wonderful message! I loved reading it and would be very interested to know exactly what you ate. Maybe it really is a related plant.

It's nice that you have so much sympathy for nature and that you can express yourself in a way that makes you feel interested.

It's really nice to read from you. Have a nice day.

This brings a somewhat funny, somewhat sobering thought to my mind, @themyscira:

"I loved reading it and would be very interested to know exactly what you ate. Maybe it really is a related plant."

Did I know, with certainty, it was an edible plant? Or just think it probably was an edible plant? The honest answer is the latter, when one might argue my life literally depended on it being the former.

Fortunately, as I suppose one might reason from reading these words, I guess I was fortunate in making my educated guess. I am typing away, undamaged as far as I know. 😉

What I can say with certainty from those experiences was the plant had all of the characteristics of being in the onion, garlic family of plants. Where I have found them, they are in clusters of many plants, not in solitary isolation. I think due to how their bulbs are part of their reproductive process.

You are likely far more of an expert in these plants than I am, but I enjoyed reading your post, as one of the Silver Bloggers community's weekly highlights.

Thank you for writing it! 🤝

We have it in Norway, and it is known as "ramsløk" in Norway. It is mostly found in springtime and used for many different recipes like soup, salad, and some paste used on bread we call pålegg. There are some medical uses also. You found a really valuable thing. Have a nice evening, happy soul. : )
