The Special Soup Only Grandma Made Right

I fell very sick almost a year ago.

It was so serious, my mum had to take me to go be with my grandma for treatment until I got well.

I've always loved to visit grandma but not as a sick granddaughter, I love to help wherever I can.

But last year was different, I went there not able to do anything for myself. I was super exhausted.

But as expected from a grandmother who loves her grandchildren so much, she took care of me.

I couldn't even think I was stressing her because she kept praying for me to get well, I felt blessed.

I spent over a month at grandma's before I began to get better, grandma made sure of my meals.

And that's where a memory of a taste I loved came playing in real time for me, I was so happy.

Grandma loves to think meals are a cure to illnesses and a particular meal does even more.

The first time I tasted the meal, I can't remember but the last time? It has stayed with me since.

Too bad, I don't have a picture of the meal but the picture above is a native soup used as reference.

Grandma calls the soup, "Ground soup" because she prepares it without heat then she warms it.

I remember I never liked the idea of a soup that doesn't need heat to prepare but she changed it.

If I remember vaguely, the first time I tasted the soup, it was everything I never imagined it to be.

I craved for the soup after the days I spent with grandma, nobody knew how to prepare it like her.

Until last year when I was taken to stay with her, sick and uninterested in anything but to get well.

Grandma brought the bowl of soup, this time, it was warm cause my body needed warm meals.

Before that meal, I would force myself to eat because they couldn't bear to see me not eating.

But with grandma's signature ground soup, I just enjoyed myself through it, taking slow sips of it.

The taste was warm but a bit spicy and oily, but liquid enough to go down well with no friction.

I felt so good after that meal, I think it was one of the meals that helped me gained my health fast.

I made request of the soup only once after that day but the first warmth still remains memorable.

It's not a soup I know how to prepare but it sounded simple to make because grandma made it so fast all the time. I think I like the idea of having to taste the soup made only by my grandmother, it adds to the taste for me. But I know I should learn it soon. Until then, I will continue to appreciate the memory of that meal.

How sweet. I think we all have that food we associate with our grandparents. Mine is a soup made of gloutinous rice flour that tastes like a ginger tea. My grandma is long gone and can no longer cook that food for me, but I can still recall what it tastes like 🥹
