Lessons in getting older

I remember what it was like to be young (I am not that old by the way) and I have certain things that I would change about younger me if given the chance but overall, I have no regrets. I lived a good life. I made mistakes and learned lessons; I grew from those lessons and met people who would later have an impact on me.

What it is like to be young

There is no gift like that of youth. You have years to build your portfolio just in time for when the decline sets in and you cannot do as much as you could when you were young and free. As responsibilities continue to pile and you find yourself living your life with/for someone else (because that is what happens when you get married and have children), you will begin to discover the reasons for your youth. That is, if you failed to see it in the beginning.

Being young is the ultimate green card to building the life you want to carryon even to your children. It is the foundation to achieving what you want. While you are young, you have energy. You are in a constant state of exploration and learning. This is where you can make mistakes and get up. Most times, those mistakes are not enough to cost you, but the consequences are the lessons you need.

Things you can do while you are younger

Make mistakes. This is, in my opinion, more important than any other endeavour you can embark on in your youth. Leaving your shell into a world so big you feel insignificant can be quite daunting but that is just life. Life starts when you accept that you are stupid and have a lot to learn. It begins when you accept your failures and not let them weaken you but rather strengthen you. You can only be a fool for five minutes.

Therefore, as you have fun, parties, and build relationships, remember that mistakes are all a part of life. It is a cycle and our kids and grandkids will grow watching us and send that message to their generation. It all starts with you. Do not think that failing once or twice is the end of you. It is only the beginning. This brings me to the second point, which is being humble.

As you are still learning and not yet almighty wisdom, it would benefit you a lot to be humble. There are certain doors you cannot open with skills or talent alone. Sure, you are brilliant and you possess skills that the world needs. However, you can only go so far when you think that way. The world does not revolve around you and it will not give a shit when you slip up, rather it will tear you down. What I did was take a step back and evaluate my actions to come back smarter.

The Age Factor: I am x I feel

Certain young people feel older than their age. I think that is normal. I used to feel that way too. I think, “Damn, I’m turning 24! Getting old” and then it has this effect on me, which was waning my patience. There is a lot we want to do at young ages (and I think society has sold too many unrealistic expectations) that we breeze past the true meaning of life. We begin to wish our life away.

I saw a movie once where the lead character, who happens to be female, would always wish to get older and just die. The circumstances surrounding her life would make you understand why she had that thought process; still, your gift is your youth. Rather than wishing it away and finding the fastest lane to success, enjoy it and make the most of it. You will be glad you did.

Regrets & Uncertainties

I think we all have the fear of the future as young adults just coming into the world. Taking on responsibilities that feel bigger than us brings about questions and doubt. Which is okay. I mean it takes a certain level of fear to make us take the right steps. We need to be uncertain of something to make us research about it. When you are uncertain, as a young person, remember that it is okay and has to happen. You will figure it out, as you get older, that is a promise.

I was asked if I had any regrets. I do not have any worth mentioning. I was a shy young man and limited my interactions with people especially women. Maybe I wish I dated more but I am perfectly content with my life now. My wife is the best fit for me and she seems to enjoy my zero romance portfolio. Of course, she will…haha.

Conclusion

In summary, if you are young, make the most of it. I am still young too and I put in enough time and energy into things that matter to me. Do the same. Whatever your priorities, put them first and do not forget the things that should matter.

So much wisdom from a young Silver Blogger, excellent advice @brosonleo!

accept your failures and not let them weaken you but rather strengthen you

Something I heard someone say once about age, is the older one gets, the older, old becomes. So very true, but it is better to tackle some tasks/hobbies while the body is still young.

P.S. I think you would very much enjoy @ericvancewalton's #memoirmonday, check it out.
