Longing: A Bittersweet Symphony

(edited)

He experienced the sweet-sour sensations of desire and of desiring something that was beyond his grasp. When did you last feel that hunger that craving that desire that urge to have something? Not the fleeting want for ice cream or new shoes, but a longing that aches in your soul and even hurts because what you want is just out of reach. You know the kind - it washes over you for no reason while you're lying awake at night, or hits you suddenly when sipping coffee in the morning.

It's a term rarely used in everyday speech, even though we sometimes feel it. Longing isn't quite like other feelings - it's not as sharp as desire or as sudden as impulse, and it's not quite sadness or loss. It's a thoughtful, sorrowful emotion - enjoyable yet heartbreaking at the same time.

We often see joy and happiness as positive emotions, while longing is usually ignored or pushed away. Indulging in longing and feeling its full force can seem almost painful. Why would we want to crave someone's company when we could numb ourselves to the loneliness that comes with it? Yet at the heart of this feeling are elements central to being human. These questions make us think about how we might better understand this gentle ache, this yearning.

In some ways, longing is tied to our very essence as humans. It is important to point out that we do not live in isolation; the people and environments surrounding impact us in some or the other manner. Every person has his or her tale, be it a dream from his or her childhood or the reality of the adult world. Yes, we come across numerous people and visit lots of different places and gain experiences that shape us without us being able to understand to the fullest extent. Is it so strange that we might miss a particular person, time, or feeling? Yearning comes from wanting something that was once important to us, that once made us happy or gave our life meaning, and is now beyond our reach.

Longing is the echo of past happiness and contentment that never fully fades. We can only miss things that once gave us a sense of security, acceptance, love, or happiness. This is why longing is both sad and sweet: We feel sad because we can't relive those moments, but there's sweetness in knowing that for a brief time, we shared such deep happiness.

The sadness of missing someone or something can slowly change into comfortable memories. It's like intense pain fading to a mild twinge that reminds us of what we've experienced. Our ability to bond and form long-term relationships is largely innate. Even if loss or change makes the feeling fleeting, the lessons that come with it can last: the eternal desire for affection and meaning remains beyond times of longing.

Next time you're gazing at the horizon and feel yearning gnaw at your soul, don't immediately distract yourself. Don't run away from it - sit with it for a while. Let it remind you of the benefits of loving deeply. It can tune you into hope, grief, joy, or longing that's deeply human. It's about letting something spark gratitude for all that's happened in your life. You may feel the pain of desire, but longing lights up something in your spirit. If you fully engage with it, you might find yourself transformed in ways you never thought possible.

Very very poetic! Each paragraph seemed to compliment the other.

don't immediately distract yourself

This is usually the first thing that comes to me and sometimes, the safest.

The sadness of missing someone or something can slowly change into comfortable memories.

This is for me.
When an emotional hurt comes, I tend to relax because it's soon going to fade away and when the time finally comes, laughing becomes the order of the day

Don't run away from it - sit with it for a while.

Yes just a minute happens to be a great change it might be for good or for bad but just give it some time.
