The World Cup of equals [EN/PT]

The Brazilian national team showed what they came for in this 2026 World Cup, and that became very clear in the match against Japan. I already mentioned in a previous post that this World Cup is different from the others, not only because of the new format or the increased number of teams, but because there are no longer any "easy" or "naive" national teams. Maybe this really is a consequence of globalization and the way strategies have become increasingly balanced across the world. Sure, some teams have generations of players who are less talented than countries like Brazil, France, and Germany, but the gap is nowhere near as large as it used to be in previous editions.

The proof of that was the match between Japan and Brazil, which, in my opinion, was a very balanced game. And Japan, to me, is the strongest Japanese team of all time, more mature and more aware of itself than any other version I have followed. I have to admit that when the first goal was scored, for a brief moment I thought Brazil would not win this match. But, as I said, Brazil showed what they came for in this World Cup and managed to turn the game around with goals from Casemiro and Martinelli, two names I definitely did not expect to stand out in this match. Casemiro did not have a good first half, but he redeemed himself with that surprise goal, and Martinelli, whom I personally consider a very weak player for the Brazilian national team, scored as well and proved me wrong.

My bet is still on Vinicius Junior, who came incredibly close to scoring an unforgettable goal with a first-time shot through his own legs, beautiful and precise. It was a masterclass inside the penalty area, making the Japanese defenders dance awkwardly around him, and by a cruel twist of fate, the ball hit the post. It would have been a goal remembered for years and would have drawn comparisons to that legendary Maradona goal. Well, not this time. It is also worth mentioning that the assist came from my favorite player on the national team, Rayan, who came through the youth academy of my beloved club. He is the youngest player on the squad and has enormous potential, if not for this World Cup, then certainly for the next ones.

And today, well, Brazil's next opponent in the Round of 16 has been decided: Norway, the Vikings. Coincidentally, they are one of the teams I have been rooting for in this World Cup besides Brazil, but obviously my support will be with those wearing the yellow jersey. Norway has a good team, and Haaland can decide a match at any moment. Once again, he scored today, adding another goal to his World Cup tally, and I hope that by next Sunday they will have their ships prepared and fully supplied, because I have faith (not in Odin) that they will be leaving the tournament. See you in Valhalla?

And I could not finish this post without talking a little about Germany's elimination, which, for me, was sweet. My apologies to the Germans, but after the 7-1, Germany became my biggest rival after Argentina, of course. Morocco also proved their worth and sent the Netherlands packing for home. And well, while I am writing this post, I am also watching the France vs. Sweden match and cheering for Sweden, of course. I want the easiest path possible for Brazil to win its sixth World Cup title. Let's go, Braza!

A seleção brasileira mostrou a que veio para essa Copa de 2026, e isso ficou bem explícito no jogo contra o Japão. Eu já mencionei aqui em um post anterior que essa Copa é diferente das outras, não somente pelo novo formato ou número maior de seleções, mas porque não existe mais seleção "boba" ou "ingênua". Talvez isso se deva mesmo ao fato da globalização e como as estratégias estão cada vez mais niveladas. Tudo bem, algumas seleções possuem levas de jogadores menos talentosos do que seleções como Brasil, França e Alemanha, mas a disparidade não é tanta quanto nas edições anteriores.

A prova disso foi a partida entre Japão e Brasil, que, na minha opinião, foi uma partida muito equilibrada, e logo o Japão, que para mim é a seleção mais forte de todos os tempos, mais madura e mais consciente do que qualquer outra que acompanhei. Confesso que, quando saiu o primeiro gol, achei por um breve momento que o Brasil não venceria essa partida. Mas, como disse, o Brasil mostrou a que veio a essa Copa e conseguiu virar com gols de Casemiro e Martinelli, dois nomes bem inesperados para mim nesse jogo. Casemiro não fez um bom primeiro tempo, mas se redimiu com esse gol surpresa, e Martinelli, que particularmente acho um jogador muito fraco para estar na seleção brasileira, deixou o seu também e calou minha boca.

Minha aposta é no Vinicius Junior, que por pouco não faz um gol antológico com uma bola no meio das pernas, de primeira, linda, certeira. Um baile dentro da grande área, colocando os japoneses para dançar de forma desengonçada e, por um capricho do destino, a bola parou na trave, um gol que não seria esquecido por um bom tempo e que remeteria àquele gol antológico do Maradona. Bem, não foi dessa vez. Ainda vale lembrar que esse passe veio do meu jogador preferido da seleção, Rayan, que é um jogador que veio das categorias de base do meu time do coração, o mais novo da seleção e com um grande potencial, se não para essa Copa, com certeza para as próximas.

E hoje, bem, está definido o próximo adversário do Brasil nas oitavas de final: Noruega, os vikings, logo uma das seleções para a qual estava torcendo nessa Copa sem ser a seleção brasileira, mas minha torcida é óbvia que será para os que vestem a camisa amarela. A Noruega tem um bom time e o Haaland pode desequilibrar uma partida a qualquer momento, como hoje, mais um gol registrado na Copa, e espero que no próximo domingo eles estejam com seus navios preparados e abastecidos, pois eu tenho fé (não em Odin) que eles deixarão a Copa. Nos vemos em Valhalla?

E eu não poderia deixar de finalizar esse post falando um pouco da eliminação da Alemanha, que para mim foi doce. Me desculpem os alemães, mas depois dos 7x1, a Alemanha será a minha maior rival, depois da Argentina, claro. Marrocos também mostrou seu valor e deixou a Holanda com as malas prontas para voltar para casa. E bem, enquanto estou aqui escrevendo este post, também estou vendo o jogo da França e Suécia, e torcendo pela Suécia, claro, quero o caminho mais fácil possível para o Brasil conquistar o hexa.
