Things are starting to reach a fever pitch with the college football playoffs and the NFL playoffs happening this weekend. It was 2007 when Penn State last faced off against Notre Dame. That seems like forever ago and yet, not that long at the same time!
With all this excitement, it is pretty easy to forget that college basketball is happening. Yet here we are a week into the conference schedule and some teams have been getting their work in early. We've already seen some huge upsets with only one or two games behind us now.
In fact, last Thursday was a big day in the Big 10 as (22) Illinois took down (9) Oregon 109 to 77. That was the only upset among the four games played that night.
Friday night gave us two games in the top 25, the most notable being the (18) Michigan State win over Ohio State. Especially since I was actually in attendance at that game. It was an awesome time. Even though we were in hostile territory, we had a great time watching the Spartans beat the Buckeyes in their only match up this regular season.
Just look at all that scarlet and gray!
Saturday there were thirteen games in the top 25. Things got started with a huge (10) Kentucky upset of (6) Florida early in the morning 106 to 100. Then Nebraska took down (15) UCLA 66 to 58 and Arizona upset (16) Cincinnati 72 to 67. It was a rough day to be in the middle of the pack I guess!
As of Saturday, Tennessee was still the number 1 team in the nation with a 76 to 52 victory over (23) Arkansas, and (5) Alabama had a good win over (12) Oklahoma 107 to 79.
Sunday brought us six games in the top 25. None of them were upsets, so we are going to move along to this week.
Monday night (12) Houston took down TCU 65 to 46 and that was the only game of the night in the top 25.
In the Big Ten though, OSU had a double overtime thriller against Minnesota that they eventually won 89 to 88 or something like that.
On Tuesday night we had ten games in the top 25. Arizona continued their upset run taking down (21) West Virginia 75 yo 56. Georgia upset (6) Kentucky 82 to 69, and (8) Florida bounced back from their loss to Kentucky by ousting (1) Tennessee from the top stop 73 to 43. Ouch.
(24) Michigan seems to have found their way back into the top 25 and they had a big upset over (22) UCLA 94 to 75.
Wednesday there were seven games in the top 25. Villanova started things off with a spoiler against (9) UConn 68 to 66. Actually, that was the only upset of the night. Tonight (16) Michigan State is finally back in action against Washington in East Lansing. Ohio State has a game tonight as well against (15) Oregon at the Schott. If you are keeping track, that's OSU's third game in a week compared to MSU's two games. Whoever makes their schedule needs to work on that!
It's actually all Big 10 basketball to night as (20) Purdue takes on Rutgers in New York.
They should be some good games if you get a chance to tune in.
Then again, I won't blame you if you are busy watching Penn State and Notre Dame tonight.
