Despite the field being marked in yards, football is actually a game of inches and that couldn't hold more true based on some of the final scores we had across the NFL this past week. First though, I just want to give another shout out to my awesome niece who is just about one of the cutest goal tenders I have ever seen. I don't know if I will ever be much of a soccer fan, but my nieces love it, so I will likely be watching it at least for the next decade or so.
Maybe by the end of that time I will finally understand off sides!
It was a rollicking good time in the NFL this past weekend. Things are finally starting to firm up as far as the playoffs go and it's almost hard to believe that those are only about a month away.
Detroit and Green Bay kicked things off on Thursday night with a barn burner of a game that ended with a 34 to 31 Lions victory and punched Detroit's ticket to the playoffs. Once again it was some aggressive play calling by Campbell where the Lions converted a crucial fourth down and then the magic leg of our kicker Bates that won the game.
I saw a story the other day where a Minnesota player was upset that the Lions were getting so much hype this year. Sorry, man, I don't feel bad at all. We have been waiting a long time for this. Funny thing is, he made the comment that people will see who is the better team when the Lions and Vikings face off later this year.
What he probably doesn't realize is by that point Detroit will have likely claimed home field advantage and they will probably be sitting most of their starters. It would be embarrassing if Minnesota didn't win in that case!
With the loss to Tampa Bay earlier in the season, it isn't like the Lions are trying to stay undefeated at this point. They have bigger goals in mind!
Jacksonville beat Tennessee 10 to 6, Miami beat The Jets 32 to 26 in overtime, and Minnesota thumped on the Falcons 42 to 21.
New Orleans barely bested the Giants 14 to 11, and Philadelphia beat Carolina 22 to 16. Pittsburgh beat Cleveland 27 to 14 in what looked to be a pretty good game on Sunday. What I saw of it anyway. Tampa Bay beat Las Vegas 28 to 13, and Seattle took down Arizona 30 to 18.
I was sitting at home on Sunday night watching the Bills/Rams game before I headed to bed and I have to tell you, that was a dang good game. If you didn't get the chance to watch it, I feel really bad for you. There were some amazing catches. It was basically one giant shoot out by the end of the game.
I'll actually be talking a bit more tomorrow about just how good it was. Ultimately, the Bills lost 44 to 42, but dang, what a game!
Chicago had another miserable week against San Francisco, but this time with a new coach. After the tremendous loss to the Lions on Thanksgiving day, their old coach was promptly sacked the next morning. Black Friday indeed!
Kansas City continued their habit of squeaking past teams beating the Chargers 19 to 17. I can't help but wonder how a team that puts up such lackluster performances continues to win. I certainly has nothing to do with the officials favoring them does it?
Finally, Cincinnati capitalized on a huge blunder by the Cowboys on Monday night and came away with the win 27 to 20.
In the AFC that leaves Buffalo and KC as the only two teams who have clinched their division. In the NFC both Philadelphia and Detroit have clinched a playoff spot. It's funny because this year it seems divisions are either great or horrible. There isn't much in between. If you had told me at the beginning of the season the NFC North would be so competitive, I probably wouldn't have believed you.
