I'm not the sort of person who is too shy to admit when they are wrong. With that in mind, I was wrong twice this past weekend. I know, I know, it has to happen occasionally right? The first mistake I made was when I told you that the only college football game on this past weekend was the Army/Navy game. That actually wasn't true.
While a few of the smaller conference across the nation finished up their seasons with the conference championships, there were also a handful of bowl games that were played this past weekend.
Jackson State beat the South Carolina State Bulldogs 28 to 7 in the Celebration Bowl. Meanwhile, on Saturday night, South Alabama took on a couple of my in-laws alma mater of Western Michigan University in the Salute to Veterans Bowl.
It was actually a pretty good game to start off, but then South Alabama turned things up a notch and they rushed ahead of the Broncos taking a 30 to 23 victory. I've been to Western Michigan a couple of times and it's a pretty cool place to hang out if you ever get the chance.
Kalamazoo has a lot to offer.
The other thing I was wrong about was the outcome of the Army/Navy game. I thought sure Army was going to steamroll Navy in this one, but that didn't end up being the case. Navy came away with a commanding 31 to 13 victory over the Black Knights.
While we don't always watch this game, it has become a bit of a fun rivalry for @mrsbozz and I. Her dad was in the Army and my dad was in the Navy, so there is always just a bit of competitive fun going on. It's not like we wager on it or anything.
Prior to this game, there was a bit of outcry that Army hadn't made it to the college football playoff despite only having one loss on the season. They felt that they should have been considered over some other teams who had more than one loss.
The committee that puts these things together always seems to point to strength of schedule when stuff like this comes up and in this case, it would appear they were absolutely right.
I'm not saying Navy is a bad team, they actually had a really great season, but could you imagine if the Army team had to face off against a power conference team. Sure, they might get lucky, but more likely it would be a slaughter.
Despite all of that, Army should still be proud of their season. I know this loss probably stings a bit more than some of the other ones, but they still have a lot to be happy about.
There are ten bowl games throughout the week this week. Between those and college basketball games, it's going to be a quite exciting week. If you had to pick one or two bowl games to focus on, I would point you to next weekend. (7) Tennessee at (6) Ohio State could be a good one, also (10) SMU at (4) Penn State could be a good game as well. Also, you might want to check out (16) Clemson vs. (3) Texas as those three games are the first round of the college football playoffs.
Due to the new format, this is the first time a game has ever been played outside at Ohio State in December. Potentially at Penn State as well. It's going to be a chilly day for some of those boys from down south!
